Nader Explores Costing Dems Another Election

From CNN:

Ralph Nader, the longtime consumer advocate who was blamed by many Democrats for Al Gore’s loss in the 2000 presidential election, launched an exploratory committee Wednesday for another White House bid, and told CNN he is likely to get in the race if he can put the resources in place.

“John Edwards, the banner of Democratic Party populism, is dropping out, and Dennis Kucinich dropped out earlier, so in terms of voters who are at least interested in having major areas of injustice, deprivations, and solutions discussed in a presidential campaign, they might be interested in my exploratory effort,” Nader said.

Nader has launched an official exploratory committee Web site, and said he will formally make a decision in about a month. He said he is certain to get in the race if he can demonstrate the ability to raise $10 million and recruit enough lawyers to deal with ballot access issues. He has yet to formally file paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission, though he does not need to until he officially becomes a candidate, according to the FEC…

…Nader attracted close to 100,000 votes in Florida in 2000 – a state Al Gore ultimately lost to George Bush by approximately 500 votes. He brushes aside suggestions his candidacy this year may ultimately spoil the election for the Democratic Party.

“Political bigotry will be the label on anybody who uses the word ‘spoiler,’ he said. “Because ‘spoiler’ means minor candidates are second class citizens. Either we have an equal right to run for election, or we are spoilers for each other trying to get each other’s votes.”

Second class citizen it is, then.

  1. And we thought that George W. was a posturing, self-absorbed nincompoop! Words fail-but on the other hand, I can’t imagine that there are enough head-in-the sand progressives who are still willing to vote for Ralphie. But if he’s looking to raise money, I’m sure there are some potentially eager donors out there-he only needs to call Dick Wadhams and ask him for the names of the folks who bankrolled the ‘swift boat veterans for truth’…they’ll be glad to help Nader launch his campaign.

    1. for Hillary.

Sorry Ralph, but you just solidified my support for the Democratic Party’s nominee. Kos has a great diary on how the Democratic Party has already won.

  2. and an equal right to ensure that the issues you say you care about are dealt with in a way that is directly opposite of the position you espouse.

The sure way to make certain that equal justice, consumer protections, environmental protections, preservation of civil liberties, tax fairness, universal healthcare, etc. are destroyed is to run for President one more time.

Nader’s desire to run just tells me that he is perfectly content with the likes of GWB as President and that the last 8 years are pleasing to him.

Second class citizen, indeed.  He is directly responsible for millions of Americans becoming second class citizens in their own country.

      1. the “right” to run, does not mean that you will be placed on the ballot UNLESS you are a dem or a pub. Overall, I have been less than impressed with how the dems/pubs have rigged the laws to really only allow these 2 parties in.

  3. Does anyone know if Nader did anything to help Edwards? I suspect he did little if anything to help and now he believes it’s his duty to be the standard-bearer for the issues Edwards’promoted. Pompous ass!

    1. I’m sure he did nothing, but if he had it wouldn’t necessarily have helped.  Nader is toxic even among the far left.  His 2004 campaign didn’t even have the pretense of highlighting issues of corporate power, which has been Ralph’s great strength.

He has a point in that now the Democratic nomination has narrowed to two mainstream, corporate choices.  But Nader is not the alternative.

  4. Best thing to do is have forthright policy positions that address, de-fuse, or co-opt his issues.  The reason he got traction with sore-heads before was that Gore was pussyfooting around trying to avoid offending anyone.

        1. The pro-abortion, pro-gun control, and pro-immigration independents that always vote Republican?  🙂

Seriously though, I thought that Dems had the indies in the bag because they’re sick of Bush.  Now they’re automatically in McCain’s column?

            1. I meant to say “pro-illegal immigration”.  I don’t want to give off the impression that I am against legal immigration.

I guess that’s what you get when you blog while talking to your mother in law

  5. “…so in terms of voters who are at least interested in having major areas of injustice, deprivations, and solutions discussed in a presidential campaign, they might be interested in my exploratory effort,” Nader said.

Actually, it’s Republican special interests with a vested interest in more injustice, more deprivations, and fewer solutions who will fund your campaign.

    1. He just gets no respect from his fellow Dem’s.

If you take a courageous principled stand in the Democrat party that is in opposition to Move-on.org, they drum you out of the party.

We still allow McCain to run as a Republican, even though he is just a Pro Life Democrat.

Since Democrats don’t allow Pro Life views, the poor guy had no where else to go.

      See, we are compassionate Conservatives.

      1. Isn’t allowing for War with Iraq and Iran.

I hate Joe Lieberman in the same way I hate Sen. Clinton. They’re warmongers. Now you try to compare Joe to Billary, and I’ll give you a few points.

        Skyler

      2. Is not a member of the DEMOCRATIC Party, he’s an Independent who votes like a Republican.

so-called “pro-life” yet you abandon them once their born and believe in the death penalty. Yes, very compassionate indeed.

        1. is Ron Paul!

Just because he’s not shown on FoxNews doesn’t mean that he, and his hundreds of thousands (perhaps millions?) of supports, are not against the occupation in Iraq as well. Those who are for 50 or 100 more years of war in Iraq are dellusional.

  6. If we had a better electoral system, then Ralph could run without being a spoiler.  Approval voting, preference voting, instant-runoff voting, range voting… they would all allow the electorate to vote for fringe candidates whose positions they endorse while also voting for the mainstream candidates.  Just about any system would do a better job of representing the “will of the people” than the plurality system we have now.

Other countries manage to do this… why can’t the USA?  Or at least a state like… I don’t know… Colorado?

  7. We had a giant sucking sound named Ross Perot cost the GOP 2 elections that gave the country Bill FN Clinton for 2 terms.

Clinton the First never got 50% of the vote in any national election, but is the Hero of the Democrat’s because he had cousin Ross as a shill for him.

And you want to complain about the 6 votes Ralph Nader got.  Pleeeze.

    1. While I’m a Democrat, I think supporters of both parties should be behind voting reform.  If people could have voted for both Perot and Bush (or Dole), maybe Clinton wouldn’t have won.  Or some might have voted for Clinton, and he still would have won.  But we don’t know, and we ended up with the situation you describe.
