  1. Tonight the PBS news show (starts at 6 p.m.) will be profiling Colorado and the concerns of voters in the state. As part of a series of reports, the show has already looked at Minnesota and New Jersey, holding round table discussions with voters there. Should be interesting.

    1. John Edwards to quit Presidential race

Democrat John Edwards is exiting the presidential race Wednesday, ending a scrappy underdog bid in which he steered his rivals toward progressive ideals while grappling with family hardship that roused voters’ sympathies but never diverted his campaign, The Associated Press has learned.

The two-time White House candidate notified a close circle of senior advisers that he planned to make the announcement at a 1 p.m. EST event in New Orleans that had been billed as a speech on poverty, according to two of his advisers. The decision came after Edwards lost the four states to hold nominating contests so far to rivals who stole the spotlight from the beginning – Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama.

The former North Carolina senator will not immediately endorse either candidate in what is now a two-person race for the Democratic nomination, said one adviser, who spoke on a condition of anonymity in advance of the announcement.

  2. Gilpin was, I think, set to deliver the county to Edwards on Super-duper Tuesday.  I don’t know who the backup candidate is for Edwards supporters in my neck of the woods; Obama will appeal to those looking for something different, while Hillary has an active and positive presence in the area.

  3. The online debate for the 3 amigos last night went great. And anyone can do this – all you need is email & a blog.

So someone needs to step up and do it for CD-5 and CD-6. Not me – someone Republican. It’s a great thing to do and Colorado can build up a reputation as the most net-thinking state in the country when it comes to debates.

    Haners? GOPundit? NEWSMAN?

    1. But I would be more than happy to assist in such an event with GOPpundit or Newsman

GOPpundit, if you decide to go forward, let me know and I’ll give you an e-mail address

      1. Write a web app to do the whole thing. So you would log in, enter the questions, enter when each is made public, etc.

The candidates would log in, enter their answers, click post, and it would hold them until it gets all of them or the time is up, and then post them.

Would make it real easy to run the debate. But it’s not going to be there tomorrow. So for now – use ColoradoPols – that’s a great idea.

  4.    Not likely.  Despite their mutual admiration and exchange of kind words, McCain probably won’t pick Rudy as his running mate.  With whatever pluses Rudy would bring to the ticket (i.e., RINO from the northeast and the perceived hero of 9/11), he also carries too much baggage (i.e., Bernie Kerik, Amado Diallo, Judith Nathan, Donna Hanover, Abner Louema, etc.).

My guess it that it will be McCain-Snowe, unless it’s McCain-Pataki, unless it’s McCain-Ridge, or McCain-Rell.  Pick your favorite northeast RINO.

One thing we fortunately will not see is McCain-Romney.

    1. The way things seem to be in the GOP these days, I’d predict that Huck or some other religious bigot con will get the nod, so as to prevent the threatened third party challenge. Not that I believe such a threat is more than empty, but the notion of those voters staying home isn’t one the ‘pub kingmakers want to think about.

    2. McCain-Snowe seems least likely, unless he really does want to seem like the moderate; there’s too much “Senate” in that ticket.

McCain + NE governor would be a good ticket for the GOP to show a break from the past, but the party faithful might not show up to vote for them.

    3. McCain needs to persuade conservatives he will toe the line on issues critical to them including national security, economics, and constitutional integrity.

You also need someone young enough to be viable in eight years for the Presidency. (The mind-blowing “everything changes now” choice is someone who has been very clear that they don’t want the job – Condaleeza Rice.)

IMHO… someone like Huckabee only has a shot at the Veep spot if he picks up enough Delegates to be a kingmaker.

      1.    Like Cheney’s imaginary fourth branch of government?  Like the Fourth Amendment exception incorporated into the Patriot Act? Like getting rid of habeas corpus?

    4. The days of 2 white males is over. There’s no way they can run that against Hillary or Barack (or possibly the pair of them).

What would be best is a southern black female governor for balance. But this is the Republican party so no such person exists…

      1. Seems to me that most Repubs and a whole lot of Indy wouldn’t mind voting for 2 white males yet again.  There just arent many women or people of color that I can see on the Repub ticket.  KBH or Olympia Snowe would be interesting picks.  I still think Huck or Mark Sanford will be the eventual pick.

Sanford will be a repub candidate for president one day…probably in 2012 when President McCain has completed his single term and gracefully rides off into the sunset.  😛  J/K about Prez McCain…but Sanford is the most logical choice once repubs start paying attention.

      2. Bush – for all his faults – has appointed more minorities to positions of influence than anyone before including the (not)first black President Billy Clinton. Additionally he has more minority cabinet members than Clinton ever had.

Republicans and Dems have many places to disagree. Ain’t fair to say favor pasty white guys cause it just isn’t so  🙂

Ok – that was the soapbox for the day.

    5. McCain/Pallin, McCain/Bay-Hutchinson (doesn’t fit well on a sign, does it?), McCain/Martinez.

I think it’ll be important to not have someone easily identified as a RINO on the ticket-he needs someone to calm fears about McCain being a RINO.

I think McCain/Romney is more probably than Snowe, Pataki, or Ridge.  Rell would appeal geographically but probably cost McCain more in the long run.

Pallin would be a good choice-she has a good reputation of fighting corruption in the GOP and she won election to the governor’s seat in 2006-a tough cycle for Republicans

    1. The Rocky is now reporting that the campaign overestimated the number of people standing outside.  It’s probably no more than 2000, not the 10,000 reported earlier.  Still, with something like 9,000 inside, that’s over 10,000 people total.

  5. Well, maybe my notes aren’t, but the facts are.

As most of you know, there are two Floridas.  Nothing to do with Edwards’ two Americas.

The narrow waist, geographically, is a good divider as any.  North of that is really Georgia, and in the panhandle, Alabama with different zip codes.  As you might guess, that Florida is more old Florida, home of the crackers and conservatisim.

On the Republican side, the only counties Ron Paul took were in the panhandle.  Mitt had clusters of counties, far SW, far NE, a county in Central FL.  Otherwise, McCain.

For the Dems, Clinton took ALL of the counties below the waist.  The Edwards and Obama counties were all in the panhandle.

So, for the Pubs, the north went conservative.  For the Dems, it went liberal!

BTW, over 50% of Dems turned out in Sarasota County.  A record to send….zero delegates?

  6. Coulda been Kennedy.  Young, good looking, speaking of liberal goals and the Joe Sixpacks of America.

What will the Super Tuesday folks do? If I was still in CO, I’m not sure I would caucus for Obama and certainly not Billary.

“What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label “Liberal?” If by “Liberal” they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer’s dollar, then the record of this party and its members demonstrate that we are not that kind of “Liberal.” But if by a “Liberal” they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a “Liberal,” then I’m proud to say I’m a “Liberal.”  John F. Kennedy 9.14.1960

  7.    Perlmutter and Peter Groff endorsed B.O., Princess Di and Andrew Romanoff are supporting H.R.C. (I got a phone call from Romanoff yesterday re:  going to see Bill Clinton tonight).  Have Udall, either Salazar, or J.F.G. picked sides in this fight yet? Are any of them planning on doing so?

On the GOP side, I know Tank and the Potted Plant are supporting “Mittens” but have Musty and Lamborn endorsed anyone?

    1. if Udall claims support for anyone before Tuesday (or until we have a winner).

Also, does going to a rally mean “support”, and if so, does Hick being at Obama’s thing this morning mean he’s backing BO, or do you think he’ll go to Clinton’s event as well?

      1. that Hick is supporting Obama, and if he goes to his caucus would vote for him.  But I doubt seriously if he would make any kind of public endorsement for the same reasons cited above, about Ritter.

  8.    U.S. Rep Tom Davis (RINO-Va.) just announced that he too will be calling it quits at the end of this term.

This district in the D.C. suburbs is competitive and should be a pick up for the Dems, especially if the GOP nominates a solid reactionary.

          1. Seriously, you moderates need to go reclaim your party – because in 2010 I want some Republicans I’m willing to at least consider.

And up here in Boulder I want a complete slate of really good candidates so we can start kicking some of the bozos we have in office now out – starting with the county commissioners.

            1. I know you’re going tongue in cheek by calling me that-but let me explain why I like Davis so much.

Yeah, he and I don’t see eye to eye on every issue, he is more moderate than most Republican, but he’s also much more Republican than almost any Democrat.

What sets him apart is the guy is a tireless worker focusing on what works.

But he can be partisan too.  He headed the house republican committee in 2002 (IIRC) where Republicans gained.

He has always been vigilant when it came to his district, but he also had a national scope that’s uncommon in members of the house.  It was a view point that he held for much of his life-Davis could name all 100 senators and all 435 members of the house when he was 17.

In short, Davis was a one in a kind representative.  He formed my view of what a U.S. representative should be when it came to their depth of knowledge, passion for their job, and demeanor.  Sadly, most members of the House and Senate in both parties don’t measure up to his example.

              I will certainly miss him

            2. Well they cant be any worse then the BOCC in Arapahoe. Dyer from the legislature; Weddig either from the legislature or Aurora city council; Beckman who was term limited but now she can run for another term due to Dyer; Bockenfeld well you have to listen to him to understand and Noonan who at least tries (she is ours) but she is only one of 2 Dems on the BOCC.

This is being polite too.  We realy should call them Comm right wing, pro business; Comm Witch; Comm Wishy Washy; Comm  not too bright and Comm ???

  9. We live in the small section of Arapahoe in CD1.  It seems we are stuck with Degette who we cant stand and who doesnt seem to help anyone but the illegals of her district.  Anyone have a suggestion in how we get rid of her; legally???

Also does anyone know who approves the wording on a county wide petition?  We would like to change how we elect the BOCC and as usual the clerk’s office is being its usual efficient self.

        1. Well; true but that is not what we are told by the employees.  Of course they are not the ones who have to deal with the problems they cause!!!

We have lived here 20 years and we didnt hear of any other method we had to elect them changing.  We only know that due to decisions they make daily; that effects are little area but we can only elect one of them.  State law allows for 2 methods.  The second method is every voter elects all 5 but they need to live in specific areas or we can do 3 districts and 2 at large with either every voter electing  all again or only voters of each district voting for 3 and all voting for the other 2.

We checked and there are 105 k GOP; 90 K Dems and 95 K the rest but we have 3 / 5 GOP and there used to be 4.  The GOP doesnt deal with basic issues like roads; shovelling snow for sidewalks in the unincorporated areas; they approved tons of development for the money; etc.

Dems dont like county wide runs like our school district as they say it costs too much more.

Dyer put a measure on last year to increase the terms and it passed.  They however are too chicken to put a measure on this ballot to change how we elect them so we need to go the petition route but to do that we need to know who approves the wording before we can collect signatures.

          1.    It had been three members elected at large, and from the 1960’s until 1996, they were entirely Republicans.

When the board went to five members, they ran in districts, one of which (Weddig’s) is safely Democratic. Noonan’s district is competitive, but the other three lean Republican.

Going from 3-0 to 3-2 is progress.
