How did you post this at 7:30? The thread has been open for at least five minutes and its not even 7:30 yet?
Pretty tricky.
What is with this “us against them” attitude? Dems vs Reps……….Talk radio spouts the same garbage. Boulder show calls down the republicans blaming everything from global warming to the riots in France on Bush. Denver AM blames everything on the liberals.
I’m thinking it is time to grow up and work together. Stop bickering and maybe we can get something done here to help instead of hindering.
What a good morning….
Maine passed on discrimating against Gays, by a 10 point margin
In Dover, PA the pro-intelligent design school board was voted out en masse
In St. Paul MN the pro-Bush Democratic Mayor was crushed by a 2-1 margin
All of Arnold’s Propositions in CA went down
Tim Kaine finished the campaign strong and retained the VA Gov’s seat for the Dems – even after W campaigned for his opponent
John Corzine won the Gubernatorial race in NJ, holding that seat for the Dems easily
the Ohio 2nd race in August was a prelude to last night, which could very well be a prelude to 2006. The backlash has been building since the Schiavo debacle last spring and it has not slowed down since…
should be a fun year coming up….
Katrina: What Happened When
It will take months to get the full story, but meanwhile here are some of the key facts about what happened and when officials acted. September 16, 2005 Modified:November 8, 2005 Summary Multiple investigations are likely into the response by federal, state, and local officials to the disastrous flooding of New Orleans from Hurricane Katrina. New facts are still emerging, and we expect it will be months or years before a full picture can be properly assessed. In response to numerous requests, we present here a brief timeline of events, as best as we can document them from public records and the best news reporting from the scene. We do not blame or excuse anyone, and leave it to others to judge what, if anything, could or should have been done differently. All times are converted to Central Daylight Time.

Elephant in the (CU Foundation) Room.
According to the Rocky Mountain News Michael Byram said, ?”I don’t think it’s a question of the amount so much,” Byram said. “It’s a question of whether or not it’s appropriate. “If it’s not right, then you don’t tolerate it. Whether it’s $200, $20, $5 or $10,000.”
Earth to Michael: YOU were in charge, responsible for, had a fiduciary responsibility for every penny in the Foundation accounts.
And NOT ONE reporter got the answers to the tough questions of Michael. Q1. Were you aware that hundreds of thousands of dollars were being spent inappropriately? Q2. If you were aware of this what did you do about it? Q3. If you were not aware of money being spent inappropriately, WHY NOT?
Michael YOU DID tolerate it. Unless of course the ?you? in the above quote is someone other than you, Michael.
Q4. Were you complicit in the spending of this money? Did you approve of it? Did you participate in it? If so are you responsible?
The audit found that ?the process? bypassed CU controls, policies and STATE FISCAL RULES. The ?process? bypassed NOTHING. People bypassed controls, policies and rules. Who are those people and who is their boss?
The Rocky Mountain news reports, ?Some of the purchases were clear violations of state spending rules or CU policies – or both.? Who violated those rule and policies? Who is their boss?
Michael ?deflected? some of the questions about specific expenses. Someone might want to keep asking the questions until some answers are forthcoming from Michael.
Michael was ?bothered? by a $200 ATM withdrawal. The auditors were ?bothered? by a transaction where the foundation booked a pledge of $5.75 million for a building and then agreed to pay rent of $9.9 million. Hey, what?s $4 million here or there?
Who was an $875,000 Lear Jet sold to for $100,000?
NO ONE is accountable or responsible for all the mismanagement of the money because, Byram will take the criticisms to heart and work to change the system.
I’ll add that as happy as I am about last night’s results the Dems have a LOT of work to do. They are working on rolling out their new platform for the ’06 elections but they need to get their message out sooner rather than later. In ’94 the Republican’s ran entirely negative until the summer when they rolled out the “Contract With America” – I’m afraid that the Dems will wait too long, I keep hearing people cite that point about how late in the cycle the GOP waited to roll out their positive agenda. The Dems still have an image problem and, imo, the sooner they start correcting that the better…
Yes, TBM, there are all sorts of encouraging signs that the pendulum has reached its right-ward apex only 25 years after it began swinging that way. That wasn’t SO bad was it? (Well, except for the fact that the courts are set firmly on the right for another 25 years). The Repubs will continue to control Congress for a good while (how could it be otherwise when 99% of incumbents win reelection?), but I expect them to be a bit more restrained, at least.
What a great year ’06 could be for Dems in Colorado, and what a weak ticket we have overall for state-wide races (can it be described as a ticket when there’s not even a candidate for every race?).
Murrow – you have some of your facts wrong regardng the audit. I was there yesterday and asking many of the questions you’ve raised. I don’t have the time right now to tell you how Byram responded but I will get back to this later.
So CU has another scandal. Inapropriate spending practices……..Imagine that. Weren’t they just pushing for the tax increase…I mean Ref C&D, because they were going to run out of money and have to turn people away? Support higher ED, I believe that is what they were preaching.
Also isn’t it a little odd that this comes out a week AFTER the election. An election that damn near 1/2 of the people that bothered to show up to vote said no to the state keeping their TABOR refunds. Maybe because we all know there are shady things going on in the schools, and I’m sure even more so in ‘ol Gov’s office.
Don’t matter, we have plenty of cash. We’ll just take from those that have and give it to those that want it.
Socialism is what it is called. That’s where we are heading.
Is he in or is he out? I think Mayor Hickenlooper’s new name should be “Half-Way-Hick”
Go back to cleaning up the Augean stables, Hercules. Every dime raised by the CU Foundation is private money, donated by people who support higher education and want to advance human knowledge. Too bad you’re not one of them, but get out of the way if you can’t lend a hand. Referendum C’s passage is proof that the times, they are a changin’.
Uh huh Voyaguer, that may be so but still doesn’t change the fact that they are wasting money but begging for ours at the same time. You might want socialism but I don’t. Times are a changing for the worse if you have your way.
Hercules – maybe you don’t get it. “They” are two different groups of people. The Foundation is not the College. The Foundation is a private charity, not a beneficiary of Ref. C.
PolFan asked over in the Rep. Degette Q&A about the timing of votes.
To my knowledge, the unfortunate truth is that vote calls do not always have multiple days’ notice, and bills like the Medicare Drug Benefit bill can be called at inconvenient times so as to reap the benefits of altered attendance. And 3000 page bills can be called to a vote within a day, as we saw last year with the omnibus spending bill. The House or Senate leadership is responsible for scheduling votes; in the Senate, procedural moves can sometimes slow things down to a rational pace if desired by enough Senators.
Don’t confuse hercules with the facts, Phoenix. He has enough to do shoveling out those stables.
No worries, voyageur. Hercules is about as associated with the facts as Xena…
SYK – NYSE listed – is a big short. The orthopedic implant industry margins are going to be squeezed as hospitals have been getting pressure put on them to reduce expenses. Stryker has benefitted far too long by gouging it’s customers. Perhaps they should have been charged a “Windfall Profits” tax long ago…
Anyway, market forces being what they are – Stryker should deliver short sellers some decent profits as their own profit margins drop.
Take a few hundred million dollars of net worth away from Pat Stryker – Do Colorado a favor and short the stock!
Not so fast, Voyegeur. This morning’s News reported the following:
“To be sure, the foundation is an indispensable bulwark of the university whose contributions greatly enhance its mission. In fiscal year 2005, the foundation contributed about $48.5 million in gift money to the university (not including transfers to the university’s hospital authority), while the university paid the foundation around $11.3 million for a variety of services.”
So, for whatever reason, at least $11.3million in tax dollars accrued to the Foundation.
Now, I’m a CU alumnus and do care for the health of that institution. But, the facts do support some creative accounting by CU and the Foundation.
Happy Hump Day Everyone. Its a great day to be a Democrat!
It’s NEVER a good day to be a Democrat!
Democrat…Republican…they’re all crooks
I don’t know, Dark Horse. Last night’s elections certainly make it feel like it’s a good day to be a Democrat to me…
That, and watching the Frist/Hastert urgent leak investigation call go down in flames thanks to Trent Lott’s revelation…
I’ll try to be carefull not to dump you too hard Voyaguer when I dump my shovel.
I just want to say that the republican leadership in Denver and DC is going down the tubes. And I’m about as republican as one can get.
I bet a lot of conservatives are just going to sit out the next couple elections.
On this one issue I’m with the real Republican conservatives: until the GOP gets the corporate crony leadership out of office and gets back to real fiscal conservative, socially responsible values, they’re going to increasingly find themselves on the sidelines.
Hearing Ted Stevens calling on oil execs to explain their newfound profits while Stevens refused to give back his $250 million in bridge construction pork to help balance a budget was ludicrous. Of course, he was nice enough to waive the tedious swearing-in bit for the execs – wouldn’t want any future prosecution for lying under oath, you know…
Yeah Phoenix, what’s with Senate Republicans waiving the swearing-in for the oil execs, even making a stink about it after Democrats asked? Nearly everyone takes the oath to tell the truth before speaking to Congress. Baseball players all did it recently. Are they just acknowledging that the wartime profits hearings are a farce, and lying is just fine?
Beaupreznit, sworn or not, it’s against the law to lie to Congress. Unless, of course, you’re a member of Congress. Then, it’s standard operating procedure.
Yeah – just not as against the law. Lying under oath is a more severe crime than lying generally. Just ask Libby.
Didn’t Rumsfied/Cheney/Bush ostensibly invade Iraq because they had chemical and biological wmd? Why is the US military using chemical weapons on civilians in Iraq? Where’s the outrage? Insane.
In a documentary to be broadcast by RAI, the Italian state broadcaster, this morning, a former American soldier who fought at Fallujah says: “I heard the order to pay attention because they were going to use white phosphorus on Fallujah. In military jargon it’s known as Willy Pete.
“Phosphorus burns bodies, in fact it melts the flesh all the way down to the bone … I saw the burned bodies of women and children. Phosphorus explodes and forms a cloud. Anyone within a radius of 150 metres is done for.”
Who among the readers at this site won’t condemn this???
Sorry Sir Loin, you need to brush up on your military ordinance. White Phosphorus isn’t a chemical weapon, it is a explosive fragment weapon. Unlike regular frag ordinance where razor sharp, semi-molten hot bits of steel fly through the air, with a WP round, burning pieces of phosphorus are the primary projectiles.
Does WP suck? Is it a horrible weapon? YEAH.
Is it a chemical weapon that causes death or severe injury by breathing in it’s effects and is best used on civilians without gas masks? NO. It is a “BANNED” weapon? NO.
Outrage? Get real.
I second Iron Mike’s comments, with the quibble that there is no “i” in ordnance.
I agree with Broncos Suck. This “us against them” attitude by both parties doesn’t help anybody except the politicians trying to get noticed. The majority of Colorado voters are intelligent enough to weigh the issues on their merits. Why can’t politicians do the same?
While you quibble about the i in ordance, read this:
http://www.albasrah.net/maqalat/english/0305/us_used_chemical_weapons_in_iraq.pdf
You sheeple have no souls.
Appologies. Got my laws confused with bullets… A rare thing here in the U.S.
We shouldn’t forget that Saddam used to get his bullets confused with laws.
From the diaries — kos)
The elections of Tim Kaine and Jon Corzine were great, but to me the really exciting pickups yesterday were not in Governor’s Mansions but in small towns. I cannot speak as to whether or not this pattern was replicated across the country, but I would like to quickly share with you the results of some local elections here in my corner of the Philadelphia suburbs:
tomcurry’s diary :: ::
This is a very Republican area. Reading the local election results I could not believe my eyes. It was a long list of one Democratic upset after another, read a few:
Hatboro, PA: The Democrats have not held a single seat on Hatboro Council in 14 years. In one day, yesterday, they took a super-majority on the council and upset a Republican Mayor who had been in office for two decades.
Doylestown Borough, PA: As of Monday, all nine members of Doylestown’s council, and its mayor, were Republicans. After election day, Democrats took three of those seats and the mayorship.
Doylestown Twp, PA: Two Democrats defeat Republicans for open supervisor seats in very conservative township.
Hatfield Twp, PA: Republicans lose their 4-1 grip to a 3-2 Democratic Majority.
Chalfont, PA: Two Democratic challengers took spots on the borough council.
Warminster, PA: A Democrat wins the job of township supervisor for the first time in more than a decade.
Warrington, PA: The board of supervisors was 4 for 4 republican. After big upsets last night, it stands at 2-2.
Quakertown, PA: Republican Borough Council President ousted by a Democratic challenger.
—
These wins are telling and significant. There is a serious backlash against the Republican party right now, all the way down to the smallest of town councils. By the way, almost all of these towns are in PA’s 8th district, currently held by a Republican. There is serious Democratic momentum. Let’s capitalize on it.
iron (Whipple) Mike:
Saddam got his bullets and laws from Rumsfield and the military industrial complex who are ripping the heart and sould out of democracy. Wake up!
iron (Whipple) Mike:
Saddam got his bullets and laws from Rumsfield and the military industrial complex who are ripping the heart and soul out of OUR country. Wake up!
Oh please Sir Loin! You are living in a state that has had a GOP GOV for seven years, and in a nation that has had a GOP Pres for five, yet you are still allowed to publish blatant anti-American crap. Go to the root page on that web site and tell us how proud you are to be an American sirrah.
And don’t give us that “Rumsfeld created Saddam” crap dude. The Baathists created Saddam in their quest for “Iraqi” Home Rule with law and order. Rummy just thought he found an ally against Iran.
