Good Week for Perlmutter

  • by: Colorado Pols

Democrat Ed Perlmutter is coming off a pretty good week, one that may help him pull ahead significantly in CD-7.

First, Perlmutter won big in a straw poll conducted at last week’s caucus, picking up 325 out of 367 committed votes (Peggy Lamm got 26 votes and Herb Rubenstein snagged 16 votes). Then on Friday, the Colorado AFL-CIO endorsed Perlmutter’s candidacy in a move that could have ramifications for Lamm. Strong unanimous support from organized labor will make it less likely for EMILYs List to back Lamm with its full support. Since Lamm has not shown the ability to raise a great deal of money on her own, any weakened support from EMILYs List would be a significant blow to her campaign.

AFL-CIO Endorses Ed Perlmutters Campaign for Change

(Golden)  Today, Ed Perlmutter, Democratic candidate for Colorados 7th Congressional District, announced that the Colorado AFL-CIO officially endorsed his candidacy.

A two-thirds majority of the Executive Board, not a simple majority, triggers an endorsement. Perlmutter received more than the two-thirds needed to receive the AFL-CIOs backing.

Perlmutter adds the AFL-CIO to a growing list of key labor endorsements including the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), Teamsters Local 537, Carpenters Local 55 and the American Federation of State, County, Municipal Employees (AFSCME).

Eds track record on behalf of working men and women during his eight years in the legislature and his proven experience and leadership in the 7th CD community, are among the many reasons that the Colorado AFL-CIO is proud to endorse Eds campaign to bring about change in Congress. Said Steve Adams, President of the Colorado AFL-CIO.

“I’m proud to have earned the Colorado AFL-CIO’s endorsement and support.  They share my belief that change is desperately needed in Washington, and their backing reflects the confidence their members have in my ability to win and deliver, said Perlmutter, former President Pro-Tem of the Colorado Senate. My family has a long history of supporting working men and women, a legacy I continued while serving in the State Senate for eight years and one I will advance as the next Congressman from Colorados 7th Congressional District.

  1. For the ill-informed (the last two posts), Perlmutter has been quite vocal that he supports the Murtha Resolution on Iraq.  Peggy has been the only Democrat ducking this issue.  As her campaign drifts watch for the negative attacks to start.  She will no doubt do to ED what Gene Nichol did to Strickland, and Ricky O can slide into a seat in Congress on a wave of Democratic blood-letting….

  2. It is kind of interesting that Ed Perlmutter and Peggy Lamm have yet to take a stand on the
War in Iraq. Are they Pro-Bush on the War? Are they Anti-Bush? Are they in the middle?
Where do they stand on Iraq?

  3. Where do Peggy Lamm and Ed Perlmutter stand on the War in Iraq?
    Do they support the President?
Do they oppose the President privately but support him in public?
    Do they have a position?
Or, are they both ducking the issue?
No issue is more important to this country than the War in Iraq. Is it asking too much for candidates to take a position, any position on this issue?

  4. Uh, Way2_liberal, I’m guessing that’s just a joke, because that’s about as serious as anybody is going to take it.  I’m sure the AFL-CIO made a big mistake there, counted their votes wrong and sent out a bogus press release. Or, better yet, it’s a conspiracy launched by the Perlmutter people . . . just let me just go finish folding up my tinfoil hat.

And Ed is strong in Jeffco, which comprises about 2/3 of the voters in CD-7 unless I’m mistaken.  Peggy or Herb could enjoy support of more than 50% a piece in Arapahoe and Adams (not bloody likely, but just suppose) and still fall miles short of Perlmutter.

It seems like these attack posts get more pathetic and insane everytime Perlmutter’s campaign gets more good news.  They make Peggy and Herb look worse if this is actually their supporter’s take on reality . . .

  5. It is interesting that Ed’s list of endorsements has been shrinking rather than growing as of late. The names of some elected officials have been removed, and now the truth comes out that Be The Change did not make an endorsement yet. Congrats on the AFL-CIO endorsement, though … that will look nice on the website for a week before it disappears too.

  6. FYI, here’s what Peggy says, and has been saying over and over again, about Iraq:

“I believe we must implement an exit strategy and begin to redeploy our troops. In the meantime, we must fulfill our responsibility to the men and women who are serving in Iraq and ensure they have the best equipment available, as well as access to services when they return to the United States.”

If you listened to the Jay Marvin show, you know that Peggy believes that President Bush misled us into the war, and that it’s an untenable situation that we must get out of sooner rather than later.

    and today, 3/28/06:

Sen. Ken Salazar distanced himself today from fellow Democrats who are calling for an accelerated withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. Salazar, D-Denver, was part of a bipartisan group of lawmakers President Bush invited to the White House Tuesday to share the lessons they learned during recent congressional delegations to the battle zone.

  7. Why on earth is Peggy’s campaign headquarters now located in Denver? Could it be that she got caught with her Arvada apartment being her office and not her residence?

Feel free to direct any future questions you have about policy positions to the campaign (campaign@peggylammforcongress.com); much more likely that I’ll see your questions and answer them.

  9. Ken’s interest in Iraq is working for real solutions.  As the need for posturing is lessened, I am heartened that Ken wants to do right by forces that have been deployed, but wants a workable solution to the situation we were a part of creating.  I’m certain he would have been more circumspect and been bent on consensus building if he had been the initiator.  But, that is history.  Wallowing in the past does nothing for the present.
