As the Grand Junction Sentinel reports:
With a theme of natural resource protection, Democrat Ken Brenner of Steamboat Springs announced his candidacy Monday for the Colorado Senate seat that covers most of northwest Colorado.
Brenner, 53, made announcements in Rifle, Eagle, Glenwood Springs and Steamboat Springs. Brenner’s likely Republican opponent is state Rep. Al White, who moved from Winter Park to Hayden last year to run for the District 8 Senate seat held by Republican Jack Taylor, who is term-limited. The district includes Moffat, Routt, Jackson, Rio Blanco and parts of Eagle and Garfield counties.
Gesturing toward the Roan Plateau in front of a handful of supporters in Rifle, Brenner called it “the perfect backdrop to achieve a balance of resource development and protecting wildlife and the environment.”
“If we can’t do that here in Garfield County, when will we ever learn how?” Brenner asked.
Brenner said Republican legislators from northwest Colorado have done little to protect the wildlife habitat and landscape of the region from over-exploitation by energy companies.
More on Brenner’s announcement tour in today’s Steamboat Pilot, Vail Daily, and Glenwood Springs Post-Independent.

A strong Democrat running in what is still a heavy GOP District. While Al White has shown himself to be a moderate Republican, Ken has demonstrated that White has done little to nothing in preservinig some of Northwest Colorado’s natural heritage.
Regardless of who wins, they will be a marked improvement over Jack Taylor.
