“I’m sure this means we’re winning:
U.S. warplanes unleashed one of the most intense airstrikes of the Iraq war Thursday, dropping 40,000 pounds of explosives in a thunderous 10-minute onslaught on suspected al-Qaida in Iraq safe havens in Sunni farmlands south of Baghdad.
The mighty barrage – recalling the Pentagon’s “shock and awe” raids during the 2003 invasion – appeared to mark a significant escalation in a countrywide offensive launched this week to try to cripple remaining insurgent strongholds.
That the insurgency — five years after “Mission Accomplished” — is still powerful and entrenched enough to draw airstrikes of that size, that close to Baghdad, should tell Americans everything they need to know about how completely futile this war is.”

Let’s stop the political gotcha and look at the facts.
The sign was on an aircraft carrier returning from a mission to support the invasion of Iraq.
It’s mission by anyone’s standard was accomplished. (Highly successful with flying colors so to speak.)
No one said the war was over, in fact, you on the left had criticized President Bush for clearly stating it would be a long war on terror.
“Endless war” I think you call it on your bumper sticker.
major combat operations in Iraq are over on the deck of that aircraft carrier after landing a plane on the deck of said carrier in one of the most ridiculous PR stunts in a presidency filled with PR stunts….yeah nice cover Newsie. And its endless (cross out the less) this war.
Engaging an enemy’s uniformed Army, Tanks, etc. Yes
As in everybody now loves us and we will not have to fight AL Qaeda. NO
We did beat Iraq in short order, it was a victory, and the mission was accomplished.
The war on terror is not over.
The against Iraq’s government is and was.
That should read
the banner was referring to only that particular carrier, right? Yeah, I don’t think so pal.
Defend this war….on any level you want to attempt to…..and you lose.
Read Bush’s speech – he was talking about combat operations in Iraq as a whole.
are we not now, or have we not been, engaged in major combat operations in Iraq in the period of time since that speech?
I received an official written response from the
US Army Legal Services Agency,
US Army Litigation Center,
based in Arlington,
dated 27 June 2006,
that says that major combat operations ended on or about 1 May 2003;
the next phase was an occupation phase, until governance authority was transferred on June 28, 2004;
and that operations in Iraq since then
are in the Stability Operations phase of an international armed conflict.
…………………
So not only are major combat operations over in the official position,
so is the occupation.
If our Army officially admitted that we are still de facto occupying the country,
then they would be in a weaker position to call the “Resistance” an “Insurgency.”
I guess.
…………………….
Same document said that what Blackwater and other Security contractors do in Iraq
is comparable to what Wells Fargo, Loomis and Brinks do
when they go to the mall to pick up cash receipts.
The Army vehemently denied that contractors killing civilians amounts to “combat,”
as I alleged.
They nearly denied the existence of any organized enemy.
We just got the last critical bug fixed for our release candidate!!! Time to celebrate.
