Don't Touch the Monkey

Today’s Denver Post described how TSA was protecting us from terrorism by developing procedures for handling helper monkeys and searching disabled people and motorized wheel chairs.

What are TSA procedures?  “Don’t touch the monkey,” but direct the monkey handler to remove the monkey’s diaper to show the areas covered by the diaper.

Boy Howdy, I feel safer.

As I read the article, it was apparent that the TSA is focused not on actually preventing terrorist acts, but trying to treat everyone equally.  The focus seems to be to treat handicapped individuals equally even when it’s inconvenient, and it’s completely apparent they are not a security risk.  That is not effective government in my opinion.

Instead of sippy-cup inspections, liquid bans, monkey diaper inspections and X-raying shoes, how about doing something effective, like interviewing passengers (like the Israelis do) and focusing on the ones who are potential threats (Middle Eastern males with one-way tickets)?

  1. I was saying this before 9/11 and more so since.  I went through Israeli IDF security 25 years ago.  Long and detailed, it was a true bulwark against terrorism. I didn’t mind one bit. What we have in the US is a joke.  As you say, more concerned with Constitutional issues than security.

    1. The Israelis ask passengers really basic questions — where are you going, why are you going there, etc.  The idea is that it’s pretty hard, if not impossible, to remain calm when being questioned by a cop if you have something to hide or are planning to blow up the plane you’re about to board.  The Israelis profile potential hijackers (i.e., Arabs flying to or from Israel) for more intensive questioning.

Flights to and from Israel have not been hijacked since the 1970s, but there have been complaints that the Israelis single out Arabs for searches, etc.  That’s the nature of profiling and why it’s not employed in the US where TSA is more concerned with treating everyone equally (e.g,., under TSA rules EVERYONE has to throw out their liquids rather employ common sense screening that examines the liquids/baggage that potential terrorists might be carrying on).

Here’s an article that describes the technique:

      1. It’s good information.  I’m curious though-do you think our situation mirrors Israel’s enough to mirror their model exactly?  Are there any areas we should not follow, and why?

        Sounds really test-ish, I know.  🙂

        1. I cannot believe that our current security solution — that inconviences everyone and imposes on people who are obviously not a threat — is sensible.  Making millions of travelers throw out their toothpaste and shaving cream and empty their sippy cups because those might be used for bombs seems really dumb.
