Latest poll, Edwards does best against GOP

CNN is just releasing a poll showing Edwards is doing the best against all Republicans and has the highest margin of victory in General Election matchups.

http://i.a.cnn.net/cnn/2007/im…

Interviews with 1,002 adult Americans conducted by telephone

by Opinion Research Corporation on December 6-9, 2007. The

margin of sampling error for results based on the total sample

is plus or minus 3 percentage points.

FOR RELEASE: TUESDAY, DECEMBER 11 AT 6 AM

http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITI…

Edwards performs best against each of the leading Republicans. In addition to beating Huckabee by 25 percent and McCain by 8 percent, the North Carolina Democrat beats Romney by 22 percentage points (59 percent to 37 percent).

This is some good news to focus on and to stay above the fray of the negative campaigning that will be going on in this last few weeks.

UPdate: Just read this and thought I would add it in, cause of the way it sounds…

Standing outside the “Main Street Express” bus inside the Polk County Convention Center, John Edwards kicked off an 8-day tour of Iowa telling supporters that it’s “crunch time” and urged them to caucus for him on January 3rd.

If you “stand up for me,” Edwards told the union-heavy crowd, “I will stand up for you.”

Edwards told the union-heavy crowd who interrupted the speech with”President Edwards” chants that “it is time for America to rise again.”

  1. Those are impressive numbers. Early, I know. But who performs best against the GOP is a very important issue in this election, as all of the readers, infinitely more on top of this issue than I, would probably agree.

    1. In a real race, the GOP would eat him alive, unless Huckabee won the GOP nomination. Anybody could beat the anti-evolution, AIDs ignorant preacher.

  2. Breaking news, Republican leaning Independents marginally favor white male over white female and black male.

I really like Edwards, he is certainly my favorite at this point of the top 3 Dems. That said I’m not sure that this poll is telling us anything we didn’t already know.

  3. and yet he, too, is stuck firmly in 3rd place.

Good article that hints that the “electability” factor doesn’t seem to matter as much for this election, which the evidence seems to suggest since both McCain and Edwards are clinging to remaining in 3rd place in their respective campaigns.

  4. I wonder if, in pragmatic perspective, this matters. I think what matters is how these numbers will or would hold up against constant Republican and 527 attack. I don’t believe that Edwards has a lot in his closet to worry about, but the fact is that he’s on public matching funds the spending limits of which will make it very hard to counter the $500 million or more that Republicans are expected to throw into this race. And when he isn’t able to spend the money necessary to counter Republican allegations and attacks, I think these match-up numbers will take a dive and potentially sink his chances if he gets the nomination.

I like Edwards, I think he’s a straight-shooter, but I worry how he would hold out in the general election. Especially if he doesn’t have the money to fight back effectively.
