Democrat Bill Ritter, who is running for governor, announced a new slate of endorsements today, though he apparently hasn’t yet discovered that there are people outside of Denver who might be voting next November.
Denver City Council President Rosemary Rodriguez, Denver Board of Education member Theresa Pena, former State Senator Polly Baca (from, you guessed it, Denver), and CU Regent Michael Carrigan (representing…well, you get the point).
Ritter seems to have an uncanny ability to take a dangerous perception about himself and feed it until it bursts. He’s been doing it with the abortion issue, and he continues to do it with the “Denver politician” angle. When people accuse you of being a “Denver politician” who would be out of touch with voters outside of the big city, the best way to combat that isn’t to hire an all-Denver staff and then announce your new slate of endorsements that all come from Denver.
If you keep feeding the giant, it gets bigger. If you don’t have any more endorsements from another part of the state, don’t announce any of them.

Endorsements Bolster Ritters Campaign for Governor
Bill Ritter, Democratic candidate for governor, announced today a number of endorsements from current and former elected officials.
One of the most humbling aspects of campaigning comes when other people pledge their support, Ritter, Denvers former district attorney, said. This campaign has brought numerous such moments during our visits to the Western Slope, the Eastern Plains, the San Luis Valley and around the metro area.
With the campaign in full swing and momentum continuing to build, numerous leaders are getting behind Ritters candidacy. Among them:
Rosemary Rodriguez, president of the Denver City Council:
Im supporting Bill Ritter for governor because hell create a climate of opportunity in Colorado. His record of fighting for what he believes in gives him the stamina and endurance to take his message of opportunity to every city, town, hamlet, village and nook and cranny of this magnificent state.
Theresa Pena, at-large member of the Denver Public Schools Board of Education:
Bill Ritter is not only a strong and proven leader, but a leader of great integrity and sound character. He is a family man who is clearly committed to the pursuit and attainment of academic excellence in Colorado. I particularly appreciate the fact that you know where he stands on various issues and that his positions are based on sound and thoughtful reasoning and strong personal conviction.
Michael Carrigan, member of the University of Colorado Board of Regents:
I have known Bill Ritter for over 12 years, as a colleague, a boss and a friend. When I worked for Bill at the Denver District Attorneys Office, I was inspired by his sense of justice and commitment to public service. This same dedication and passion will make him a wonderful governor for all Coloradans.
Polly Baca, former Colorado State Senator:
Bill Ritters farming roots, labor union background, international management experience and work as a federal prosecutor and DA make him uniquely qualified to be governor. His background and passion for the citizens of Colorado will assure his success as he tackles the challenges we face. Bill Ritter is a proven and ethical leader with great integrity, a strong commitment to fairness, justice, and dedication to public service.
Other current and former elected leaders who are backing Ritter include:
Denver school board members Elaine Berman and Bruce Hoyt
Former state Senate Minority Leader Mike Feeley
17th Judicial District Attorney Don Quick
Former 1st Judicial District Attorney Dave Thomas

Thanks for the news, but it is not surprising. I have said a few times on here that his campaign is too Denver-centric.
For the record, Polly Baca represented Adams County in the legislature, not Denver. It may not be a significant difference to you, but it most certainly is to Adams County.
Sorry, but to those of us who truly don’t live in the “Denver Metro”, Adams County is the same as Denver. I realize the technical difference, but it’s all the same to us…
Ritter does come from Denver; however his story will play statewide. Ritter is a native not a transplant. Rural Coloradoans want someone from Colorado; like themselves. He is a former DA; people from rural Colorado want someone who is tough on crime. Ritter grew up on a farm and went to CSU; which is the agriculture school in Colorado. He overcame welfare and put himself through school. That is commonly called pulling yourself up by your boot straps; yes that will play in Colorado. Now his team is very Denver centric but are you sure? Do you know everyone that Bill is talking to? Can anyone dispute how his story will not play well in rural Colorado?
And since it is the operative word…
The headline should read “It Only Denver WERE Colorado.” Sorry to nitpick.
You mean… “IF only Denver were Colorado” ?
Ritter v. the Rest,
Spare me with the “he’s a naitive” BS. God. His tagline will be “Former Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter”. If you’re planning ads with Ritter walking through a field of winter wheat with a plad shirt on, you better switch stratagies. Unless he plans on changing his name to Bill Ritter-Salazar.
