    1. whew!

I was worried there that maybe another older worker would be left out without a job. Or at least without his former high paying job. But hey- WalMart needs people too.

  1. Since it's a well known fact that feminists don't care about their appearance, the blond haired beauty, pro-choice Texas Senator Wendy Davis who "shut that whole thing down" with her filibuster of Texas' draconian abortion bill can't possibly be who she says she is.  Thus the truthers work:

Current photos of Senator Davis depict someone who is not just more physically attractive, but who arguably seems younger  than the woman in her yearbook photo, even though that photo was taken 22 years ago. Her transformation is arguably more startling than that of women who have used plastic surgery in an effort to become “Human Barbie Dolls” (see, for example, “before” and “after” photos here). You be the judge:  Wendy Davis, superhero, or superfake “Human Barbie Doll”?

She's had some work done!  Her opinions must be invalid!  Sexist double standard or daring truth telling?  We report, you decide.

    1. My God!!  She got her hair straightened, colored, and styled and she put on makeup for these photos!  I don't know any woman who looks prettier and yes, maybe even younger with attention to her hair and makeup, except of course for just about every woman who has ever had her hair styled and put on makeup.  I myself was a feminist activist in college some 38 years ago or so and I barely even combed my hair, never put on makeup, and wore blue jeans and denim shirts exclusively.  Now I get my hair cut and I put on a little makeup and I get dressed up and guess what?  I don't look younger but I damn sure look better.  I guess I have lost all credibility now….

    2. Here's my guess: Hair, makeup, nails, boobs, etc are all seemingly very important in Texas – but perhaps the TX Repubs believe they "own" all that, just like Repubs everywhere "own" the flag, patriotism, religion, morality, rightness, etc, etc.

    3. Pretty guffaw inducing coming from the folks that wanted Sarah Palin a heart beat away from the presidency. I will admit that when I saw Senator Davis I did think,  wow, she looks just like one of those GOP twinkies but I won't hold that against her.

  2. Used to be you'd tell someone about the various utilities of hemp and they'd say, "You just want to see it legalized so you can go get high!" Well, now marijuana is legal to smoke in Colorado — and I'd still like to see our forests spared and toilet paper made from hemp, instead. Call it a pipe dream.

From the Washington Post article Hemp flag to fly over Capitol building:

The flag flying over the Capitol building on the Fourth of July might look like your typical Old Glory. But you probably won’t notice the fibers that make it special. It’s believed to be the first hemp flag to flutter over the dome since the government began outlawing marijuana’s less-recreational cousin back in the 1930s.

Colorado hemp advocate Michael Bowman is the man responsible for getting the flag, made from Colorado-raised hemp and screen-printed with the stars and stripes, up there.

      1. smiley I've had more fun with this project.  And the Europens even picked up the story.  We struck a chord!  If you're listening to Marketplace tomorrow morning they're airing a segment on it in the morning.

    1. I'll try not to miss him, Morsi, I mean.  We need another Anwar Sadat in Egypt.  For all his faults. . . .

Dunno what the Egyptians need, but aparently Morsi wasn't it.

    2. Remember it was a revolution of the young, professional and mostly secular in the first place. It was only because the Islamist Brotherhood already had an extensive  organization in place that they were able to win a bare majority.   Morsi's government isn't what the Arab Spring crowd in Egypt expected or wanted and hasn't delivered on even basic services..

This is also a reminder that the emphasis on just staging elections is misguided. We aren't the nation we are just because people vote but because our founders instituted a system of checks and balances and guaranteed rights that's codified in a constitution that can't be changed like socks but requires very hard to achieve widespread consensus to amend.  It may not work so swift all the time but it works a whole lot better than anything the countries of the Middle East or China or Russia or most of Latin America has to offer.

An authoritarian repressive government that's voted in isn't much different than one that's imposed.  It's the stable constitutions and institutions that make a stable representative government.

      1. I was so hoping the news would be different. Not only has the Udall family lost a beloved son and brother, we have lost a friend and the environment has lost a champion. Rest in Peace, Randy.

        1. “Randy left this earth doing what he loved most: hiking in his most favorite mountain range in the world,” his family said in a statement.

His family says he apparently died of natural causes.

        2. Rest in peace, indeed.  Losing my brother was the worst, most painful thing that has ever happened in my life so far. Losing a son, the worst, most painful thing for our mother.  Sincerest, most heartfelt condolences.

  3. Another year half gone. Another baseball season half gone. Fires rage and malign my demeanor

I hope all have a safe and fun Independence Day. Enjoy safe explosions of that great Chinese invented American tradition.
