That's the word from Lynn Bartels of the Denver Post, Colorado House Minority Leader Mark Waller is making a "big announcement" next Monday:
The Colorado Springs Republican has long been mentioned as a possible candidate for attorney general in 2014, when Republican John Suthers is term limited. So far, one Republican already has announced for the race, Cynthia Coffman, who is the No. 2 person in the AG’s office. Check out her website.
Bartels reports that Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck, whose cancer is in remission, may get into the race as well, setting up a three-way primary. This would settle questions about Waller's stomach for a primary after the entry of Deputy Attorney General Cynthia Coffman into the race. That, in turn, tells a story about fracture lines in today's Colorado GOP. How far does the arms-length disdain many Republicans have for the Coffman brand–a product of Cynthia's husband Rep. Mike Coffman's career, not hers–extend? And how much power does the "Tea Party" right still have to put behind Buck or Waller? The only way Waller can become Attorney General is if he can rally enough Tea Party-type support to win a Primary, thus forcing the GOP to back him in November.
At this point, it's wide open to speculation–and we invite our readers to make some popcorn.
