Butcher Loses Bid for Pueblo Commissioner

State Rep. Dorothy Butcher was lobbying hard for a vacancy committee appointment to the Pueblo County Board of Supervisors (county commissioners), but her lobbying was for naught. As The Pueblo Chieftain reports:

In his opening remarks asking for the appointment to the Pueblo County Board of Supervisors, John Cordova told the county’s Democrats that he would stand by whatever decision they made Thursday night, adding that he hoped it would be an easy one to support.

Then, the county Democrats stood by him and, with a resounding 94-70 vote, chose Cordova to replace Commissioner Loretta Kennedy, who stepped down last week to take a job with U.S. Rep. John Salazar’s Pueblo office.

Kennedy was term-limited in 2008.

Cordova, who ran and lost against Kennedy in the 2004 primary, surprised many observers by beating state Rep. Dorothy Butcher after two rounds of voting.

“I’m overwhelmed and I won’t let you down,” Cordova said.

  1. in the open thread from earlier this morning.

Not sure what this means for Sal or whether Butcher will try to primary Cordova in November.

Its all in my Friday open thread comment

      1. Best laid plans and all that.

As I posted in the open thread, Sal has resigned as Salazar’s district director because he thought Butcher would resign and he would get the vacancy.  Now she is not resigning and I really expect she will run for another term in the House.  So Sal, is touting his candidacy for an open seat that in now not open – and he doesn’t have a job (but he does have a new baby and a wife to take care of).

What this also puts into play is a contest for Tapia’s Senate seat when it comes open.

If Butcher had resigned, the new house member would probably not contest Buffie McFaydden for the Senate seat and it would likely have been hers without a primary.
