Poll: Who Will Win in HD-40?

  • by: Colorado Pols

Less than a week ago, the outcome of the race in Aurora’s HD-40 seemed all but certain. Incumbent Rep. Cindy Acree, faced with only nominal opposition from serial candidate and Democrat PK Kaiser, would’ve been highly favored to win another term despite the nascent competitiveness of the seat.

In the last four days, however, John Buckner not only jumped into the race but secured the Democratic nomination at yesterday’s county assembly with over 70% of the vote.

Needless to say, it’s been a tumultuous week for PK Kaiser, who endorsed Buckner’s campaign after failing to earn the 30% of support necessary for a spot on the ballot.

Buckner’s win yesterday means that he’ll be facing off head-to-head with Acree in November. Former State Treasurer Cary Kennedy narrowly won the district in her 2010 re-election campaign and Buckner’s popularity in the area will only bolster his electoral efforts. Still, Acree will be able to capitalize on the benefits of incumbency in her race against the political newcomer.

HD-40 is almost equally balanced between registered Democrats and Republicans, so this race will be a nail-biter, particularly as a litmus test in the Democrats’ overarching campaign to re-take the majority in the House. Buckner was recruited, of course, as part of that campaign.

We want to know: Who do you think will win the seat in November? As always, we want to know what you think will happen, not your preference. If you had to bet the deed to your house, who would you pick to win between John Buckner and Cindy Acree?
