Bateman Out, Endorses Melton in HD-41

  • by: Colorado Pols

Activist Andrew Bateman has dropped out of the running in the three-way Democratic primary in HD-41. That leaves political staffer Jovan Melton and Terry Todd, husband of incumbent Nancy Todd, left vying for the nomination.

From Melton:

I am honored to receive the top line at assembly with 61%. I am grateful to have received the endorsement of Andrew Bateman as well!

Bateman’s alliance with Melton might just be the last nail in the coffin for the Todd campaign. Todd previously had a natural edge over both Bateman and Melton – he shares both a name and a household with the current officeholder, after all.

The news that Melton earned the support of over 60% of delegates at today’s county assembly has shifted the dynamic of the race. It shows that the Democratic base hasn’t warmed to Todd’s talking points and is instead looking for a new kind of representation at the State Capitol.

Bateman and Melton have each made that case for new leadership: they’re both young and heavily politically involved. The similarity of their talking points, however, gave Todd a leg up in this three-way race. With Bateman’s endorsement of Melton, Todd can no longer count on vote-splitting to carry him to his wife’s old office.

The fact that Melton scored the highest number of delegates even in a three-way race might just be writing on the wall enough for the Todd campaign. If the power of his wife’s record wasn’t substantial enough to win him the support of the most involved Democrats, it certainly isn’t going to help him too much in the June primary.

Terry’s failure to gain the top spot on the ballot should also be of paramount concern to Nancy Todd. Because her husband based his entire campaign on their relationship, the HD-41 primary has turned into a referendum of sorts on Nancy’s leadership abilities. Although Rep. Todd doesn’t have a primary challenger in her race for SD-28, the fact that her husband isn’t finding much success capitalizing on her experience in the House is certainly cause enough to worry about what could happen in November.

If Nancy wins election to the Senate and Terry fails to win the nomination in the House race, you’ve got to wonder: what will the relationship be like between Senator Todd and her successor in the House? The two will have to work together because they share some of the same constituencies. If Terry doesn’t win his election, it’s fair to suspect that Nancy won’t be incredibly warm to whoever fills the seat.

Just one of the many dangers of mixing politics and relationships, folks.
