It’s because the Republican nomination for president is still anybody’s game that national observers are slowly turning their eyes to Colorado’s caucuses.
To that end, Texas Congressman Ron Paul will be campaigning throughout the state on Tuesday, just one week before Colorado Republicans have their say.
From the Ron Paul for President campaign:
DENVER, Colorado- 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul will campaign in Colorado in the run-up to the February 7th caucus. The visit will take place on Tuesday, January 31st and includes town hall meetings and a whistle stop.
“We’re delighted to welcome Ron Paul for a visit during which he will energize caucus goers in advance of the Tuesday, February 7th contest. Dr. Paul’s engagement with supporters and undecided voters just a week in advance of the caucus promises to help us achieve a competitive showing,” said Ron Paul 2012 Colorado State Director Matthew Holdridge.

More than any other candidate, Paul needs to perform well in Colorado’s caucuses to stay viable. His throng of liberty-loving twenty-somethings is particularly useful in caucus situations where the best ground game can really make a difference. After all, the candidate with the loudest, most steadfast supporters can have the biggest impact at a caucus.
Ron Paul’s not going to win here, but because he’s playing the numbers game in hopes of having an impact at the Republican National Convention, Paul needs to demonstrate that there’s an element within the Republican party which identifies with his message.
Paul’s already got a solid base from which to gain here, and if Newt Gingrich or Rick Santorum somehow fizzle out before February 7th, it’ll be Paul making the most credible Colorado challenge to Mitt Romney.
