Holy $@%&! Herb Made the Paper!

The Denver Post talks about the interest in CD-7 today, and our old pal Herb Rubenstein even got his picture in the paper. Says the Post about CD-7:

The coming election season is expected to bring national political attention rarely seen in Colorado. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report places the Colorado 7th among the nine most competitive House races in the nation. Chris Cillizza, who writes the political insider The Fix blog on Washingtonpost.com, ranks it at No. 1.

Already, political big-wigs have taken note. U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Dennis Hastert and Vice President Dick Cheney have flown to Colorado to raise money for GOP candidate Rick O’Donnell. More high-profile visits and out-of-state money are on the horizon, politicos say.

“The bottom line is there are very few open seats right now nationally,” said Amy Walter, a senior editor at the Cook Political Report. “And there are very few districts that on paper are as competitive as the 7th.”…

…The first major event of the campaign comes March 21: the precinct caucuses. That is followed by the county assemblies, where it will be decided if candidates have enough support to advance to a primary. After the primaries, on Aug. 8, it’s a three-month fight to the finish. 

But let’s get back to that picture. Send in your captions for what Lamm or Perlmutter are thinking as they watch Herb pontificate.

Herb could win this race.  It’s very early and you can’t count him out yet.  He has the best ideas, and he is the hardest worker.  Say what you want about him.  He’s putting up Katrina surviors in his house.  He has a genuine respect for public service, and he isn’t afraid to say what’s on his mind.

    I’d like to take this opportunity to express my concerns w/ Herb. I’ve talked to all 3 candidates in this picture and come away still wondering why Herb is running. You’ve got 2 local candidates, long-time party stalwarts, and 1 carpet bagger who doesn’t even appear to be a Democrat if you look closely.

    His stated tax plan (the one that has since been removed from his too-bulky website) called for creating Consumption taxes, which automatically favor the rich. His original posted education plan called for webcams in every classroom. This has since been modified, so now his education plan involves placing volunteers in EVERY CLASSROOM in America to help teachers. (Where do these people come from exactly?)

    Aside from the initially worrying stances that he has modified to be palatable to the general public, there’s the overwhelming evidence (and his own statements) that he will gladly revise a policy position if somebody just talks to him about it. Great! So when he gets to DC and there are lobbyists everywhere, does that mean he’ll modify his position when asked? What happens when the constituents are not around?

    Add to that the fact that he speaks openly about carving his policy positions out of the middle, staying away from being “left” or “liberal” at a time when the party is looking to swing things back to the left, and I don’t see why he should be supported.

    I realize he has very little chance of getting the nomination, but the way he talks about this campaign bothers me. You have to stand for something to run for Congress and we need strong Democrats.
