Andy Kerr Making "Major Announcement" on Monday

  • by: Colorado Pols

State Representative Andy Kerr, after quickly dispatching a primary challenge from veteran Brian Carroll, seems set to make some sort of announcement come Monday afternoon.

From the Andy Kerr campaign:

Andy Kerr will be making a major campaign announcement at the Belmar Shopping District, a thriving economic destination in the West Alameda Avenue Corridor Reinvestment Area.

When: Monday, December 19, 2011 from 12:00 p.m. until 12:30 p.m.

Where:  Belmar Shopping District

408 South Teller St., Lakewood, CO

In the plaza beside the ice-rink

Who:   State Senator Betty Boyd will be introducing Andy Kerr

We’re not exactly sure why Kerr would schedule a press conference the week before Christmas – or why he’d send out a press release on a Friday evening at 5:30 PM. It’s bad form either way.

We suspect, however, this press conference will likely address Kerr’s mutual residency with State House colleagues Ken Summers and Max Tyler in both HD-23 and the soon to be vacant SD-22.

This announcement could go one of a few ways. Kerr may be set to announce that he won’t be seeking another term in the House in 2012, thereby avoiding a messy primary with Tyler. More likely, however, Kerr will announce his candidacy for SD-22, Mike Kopp‘s old Senate seat currently filled by “Senator one-year” Tim Neville, who’s ineligible (by residency) to run in the election to fill the seat next cycle.

If Kerr does announce a run for SD-22, that will leave just two State Representatives living in the same district: Max Tyler and Ken Summers. With Kerr running for the Senate, there’s good reason to believe Tyler will campaign for a return to the House. What about Ken Summers, then? Rather than facing an incumbent Tyler in the relatively Democratic-leaning HD-23, Summers will most likely line up to take on Kerr for the much more competitive Senate seat.

No word on Brian Carroll’s plans.
