Former Pres. Candidate Gary Hart "What is the Soul of the Democratic Party?"

With the Democrats in the House and Senate failing to solidify their opposition to Bush’s war, and with our rights to protest being trampled upon in stories like this one for a peace protest press conference which reminds me of the  Espionage Act of 1917  or this violation of free speech on an airline  it is good to hear anyone speak up on behalf of what we as Democrats believe in.

Last week, Former Presidential Candidate, Colorado Senator Gary Hart, spoke on some of the key issues facing the country and the Democratic party…
(thanks to Crisanta Duran and the Colorado Young Dems and to Jim and Shelley Person for hosting this event)

On the Iraq War:

What did President Bush do? The Iraq War was an American invasion. (President Bush) dismissed NATO, our alliances, and he unilaterally invaded another nation.

On being a true Democrat:

If we are giving our president carte blanche to keep Guantanamo, and Abu Ghraib, and torture and surveillance, People have asked me
“What do the Democrats stand for?”
Parties must stand for something, they must believe in something, or they have no reason to exist.
What is the soul of the Democratic Party?
What are we willing to live and die for?

On Centrism in the Democratic party

With all due respect to Bill Clinton who has been my friend since 1972, the centrism and triangulation, that is to say, let’s blur the distinction and find some amorphous center may have appealed to independents for those 2 (Clinton) elections, but it left no identity to our party.

Senator Hart also spoke to what it means to be a citizen of a republic, what our duty is…

We believe in citizen’s duty, citizens owe something to this city, state, nation, and increasingly to our world

and lastly on Separation of Corporation and State…
