The barbs are flying fast and furious now. Check out the press release sent by the La Plata County Republicans in response to the Durango Herald story referenced in the previous post:
The La Plata County Republican Party would like to respond to today’s Durango Herald article: “Larson, county GOP leaders trade angry emails.”
Press Release:
January 5, 2006
The La Plata County Republican Party would like to thank Mr. Larson for his tenure as State Representative. His time and commitment to Southwest Colorado is to be respected. It is disappointing that Mr. Larson has chosen to leave in such an unfavorable manner. Be that as it may, the Republican Party has moved forward. We have formidable candidates in all races and expect to be victorious this November.
Shannon Richardson
La Plata County Republican Central Committee Chair
That seems like a completely unnecessary thing to do. Clearly the La Plata County Republicans aren’t interested in smoothing this over…only in getting in the last word.

“That seems like a completely unnecessary thing to do.”
What rot. It was a short and fairly gracious statement, quite appropriate in the circumstances.
Sorry, but the appropriate response was not to do anything. It’s not like they needed to make a statement.
There’s no way to view that as anything but a jab at Larson. If you want to call it a compliment, you’d have to call it a backhanded compliment.
Getting a wee bit desperate to stir up controversy, Alva. Given the shots at Richardson, she obviously had to say SOMETHING, and what she said was appropriate under the circumstances. If the “need” to do something is the test, you didn’t “need” to take your latest shot at her, let alone “need” to respond to a critical comment about it. Maybe you need to go back to running hot stories speculating about whoever isn’t going to run for whatever.
We don’t have to stir up anything. They’re doing all of this on their own.
i can’t believe i’m saying this, but i have to agree with cp. there was no purpose in sending out that press release other to mess with Larson. i wish republicans would stop acting like little kids ebcause we look like idiots.
Jason, suddenly you think it’s not OK to jab? Most of your posts this week have been jabs.
Jabbing at Campbell:
Well said. We never posted on this because it wasn’t a story. The story would have been if he WAS running for governor. Andrew Romanoff not running for governor is a story because there was at least minor speculation about him. NOBODY seriously thought Campbell would run.
Jabbing at Caldara:
Caldara didn?t lose the fight over Referendum C by himself, but nobody did more damage to the NO campaign than the Independence Institute head (not even former state Sen. John Andrews, who was equally ridiculous). Caldara has now lost several big campaigns in a row, and even though he is all over the place in the mainstream media, his penchant for saying stupid things and getting caught in outright lies severely undermined the credibility of every rebuttal the NO campaign tried to roll out against Refendum C. To top it off, rich developer Greg Stevinson pulled his support for the Independence Institute, in large part as a result of Caldara?s blunders. It should be a long time before anybody turns to Caldara for strategic political advice again, and many Republicans are probably wishing he’d go away. He may be the single most divisive person in Republican politics…and that isn’t a badge of honor, even if he thinks it is.
Jabbing at the GOP:
Gubernatorial candidates Marc Holtzman and Bob Beauprez spent most of the fall at each other?s throats in what looks to be only a preview of things to come; the 2006 Republican primary could be the bloodiest battle Colorado has seen in a decade, and the only clear winner out of that fight will be the Democrats. As if that wasn?t polarizing enough, the Republican split over Referenda C&D was so fractious that state party chair Bob Martinez tried to organize a kumbaya session to get everyone back together. To top it all off, some Republicans still insist on screaming about issues that aren?t going to get them elected (such as Intelligent Design), while others (such as Mark Larson and Norma Anderson, who may have grown tired of inter-party feuding) are walking away altogether and making it difficult for Republicans to take back the legislature. There?s plenty of time to put all the pieces back together again, but they?ll need all the king?s horses and all the king?s men.
Jabbing at Coffman:
Coffman had been looking forward to 2006 for most of his political life and was hoping to follow the Bill Owens path of going from state treasurer to governor. He was in the race for governor early, but then Holtzman started raising big money and Beauprez decided to run as well. With little realistic chance at winning the Republican nomination, Coffman pulled out of the race for governor after less than three months and then shipped out on a tour of duty in Iraq. Before he left in the spring, Coffman announced his intentions to run for secretary of state (SOS) in 2006; then last summer, incumbent SOS Donetta Davidson left for a federal job and Gigi Dennis was appointed to take her place. Now Coffman won?t even have a free ride to the Republican nomination for secretary of state, because Gigi sounds like someone who is running for re-election. Poor bastard. Politics in Iraq probably don?t look so bad anymore.
Jabbing at Dobson:
The Focus on the Family head overplayed his hand so many times in 2005 that he enters 2006 with only a fraction of the political juice that he had 12 months ago. Whether it was the ridiculously stupid idea to cry out that SpongeBob Squarepants videos taught kids that homosexuality was okay (quick PR lesson: NEVER pick a fight with a cartoon character ? unless you want people to laugh at you), or his constant threatening of Republicans and the White House in general, Dobson turned himself from a political player into Pat Robertson ? an angry talking head that people really don?t take seriously. His most public battle of the year, with Sen. Ken Salazar, ended up making the freshman Democrat from Colorado into one of the hottest political newcomers of the year. Good work!
Jabbing at Mitchell:
No Republican was probably more upset than Mitchell when Ken Salazar was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004, because that meant he had to leave his job as attorney general in January. Mitchell badly wants to be AG himself, and after failing to get the interim appointment he tried unsuccessfully to argue that John Suthers should only be able to serve one more term after running for re-election in 2006. It now looks like Suthers can run once more in 2010, and with no Democratic opposition at this point, there?s no reason to think he won?t be the incumbent again. To top it off, Mitchell?s likely 2008 state senate opponent, Broomfield Mayor Karen Stuart, won big in her bid for re-election in November and could very well knock him off in two years. Mitchell may be a sacrificial lamb and run for congress against Rep. Mark Udall this year, but even the conservative Hotline says his star is falling fast.
Jabbing at the GOP (again):
The chasm between right-wing conservatives and the more moderate Republicans is looking more and more like a Royal Gorge.
Jabbing at the media:
In what was the worst-kept secret of 2006, The Rocky Mountain News reported today what Colorado Pols readers have known for several days: Speaker of the House Andrew Romanoff will not run for governor.
Jabbing at the GOP (once again):
Wow. This looks like it is only going to get worse. We’ll support you if you apologize for supporting Ken Salazar? That sounds awfully theocratic.
Put a sock in it, Jason. You’re quickly becoming a hypocrite.
Lebowski –
Really? You’re telling the owner / operator of the website to shut up??? Isn’t that akin to the old saying, “Don’t get into a war of words with somebody who buys ink by the barrel”?
Get real. If you haven’t figured out, the job of this blog is to jab at politicians. If you don’t like it, take the link off of your “Favorites”. I doubt you’ll do that — CP is probably more like crack to you than you’ll ever know.
SoCoDem:
Stop imbibing your namesake and re-read the post, moron. Jason is jabbing at somoeone about jabbing at someone, yet he’s been jabbing at people all week. He’s being a hypocrite. Evidently he’s not the only donkey having problems today, because you seem to need to put down the bottle and grab your copy of Hooked On Phonics.
Lebowski, please leave the site. Pols wrote articles about winners and losers in Colorado. That’s what this site does. Many people visit this site to read this information.
Your invective, excessive cutting and pasting and ad hominem attacks provide much less value than you realize.
Please leave the site, for the sake of the rest of us. You are insulting us, and embarrassing yourself.
You can’t banish the big Lebowski because you disagree with his posts. That would be…theocratic…to coin a term.
(p.s., cols use of the term in the context it did is appropriate metaphor.)
No one is proposing banning him. We’re asking him to leave.
And it has nothing to do with “disagreeing” with his positions. It has to do with his invective, excessive cutting and pasting and ad hominem attacks.
If he truly feels the site is run by hypocrites, he should have no problem leaving us alone.
Please leave, Lebowski. Please.
Please leave leb:
Wow, you skipped Hooked On Phonics and went right to a thesaurus. What a leap! Oh no, I’m vituperating again. I need to leave this place before someone’s feelings get hurt. I’m so embarrassed. Look, I’m turning redder than Ted Kennedy at happy hour. Damnit, there I go again. I’m so insensitive.
Voyageur:
“I dig your style.”
Oh, it’s invective you hate, whoever you are, please. I guess that means you’re banishing Douglas Wray. And since you can’t stand cut and paste, I’m sure you’ll agree to cast Sir Robin bravely into the outer darkness.
If sweetness and light are the tests, there’s not going to be anyone left here except me and Iron Mike, and George. And even I’m not perfect, since I obviously suffer from excessive modesty.
Hang in there, Lebowski. I may disagree with what you say but I will defend to the point of minor inconvenience your right to say it. (Sorry about stopping well short of death, but cowardice is an old man’s first line of defence.)
I’m with you, Voyageur. Politics isn’t always about the highbrow reasoned analysis of Phoenix and DEL Johnson. It isn’t even just about the straightforward no-nonsense types like Raiders and Iron Mike. The Sir Robin/Lebowski elements are out there as well, and they vote too (!), so they should have a place on this site as well.
Of course, others can give them a smackdown if they want (and it seems to have worked in this case as Lebowski has toned down some of the personal attacks), but removing the Sir Robins/Lebowskis would not make this board a better place.
Yeah! Leave the Big Lebowski alone.
Lebowski is right you know. Alva and crew pretty much just wanted to say that the GOP sucked. It was just so obvious I was laughing too hard to comment when I first read it.
Actually I am in favor of keeping the Sir Robi / Lebowski elements… makes reading the posts much more interesting.
Who desn’t like a good old fashioned smackdown between pseudonyms?
Actually, Go Raiders, I think we should be lofty and civil in all our posts, keeping things on as high a plane as possible. By the way, the Broncos sure kicked your butts on Christmas Eve!
Iron Mike and Go Raiders are certainly cut from the same cloth, but I wouldn’t put Sir Robin on the same shelf as Lebowski. Lebowski is a load smarter than Sir Robin and usually doesn’t call EVERYONE an idiot like Robin.
What can I say? My team sucks, or at least last year we did. Our season is finally over, or was it over before it started?
I am waiting for Robin to get in on this one, but I am not sure if I have the RAM in my PC to display his entire posts. Usually the read like something a Turets (sp?) patient would say.
What can I say? My team sucks, or at least last year we did.
Wait, now I’m confused – are you talking about the GOP or the Raiders?
Happy Friday everyone.
TBM – I was talking about the Raiders… wise guy.
If it’s any consolation, Go Raiders, the Broncos will probably win one game at Mile High , then travel to Indianapolis for their annual drubbing. It definitely wasn’t the year for the Raiders, but the system is set up so that one one team’s fans are happy when it’s over…and my guess is that will be the Colts or maybe the SeaSicks. Hang in there, buddy.
