Larimer Republicans Defend Democrat Ex-Commissioner

  • by: Colorado Pols

As the Fort Collins Coloradoan reports:

While the Larimer County Republican chairman said this week his party will support County Commissioner Glenn Gibson for a third term, another Republican weighed in Wednesday lending credibility to former Commissioner Karen Wagner’s complaints about Gibson.

Wagner resigned Monday, accusing Gibson of harassing her with abusive verbal attacks and creating a hostile workplace.

In his online editorial, “The Bull’s-eye,” Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden criticized both Wagner and Gibson for the situation but suggested Wagner’s complaints had merit.

“Privately, ‘sources close to the Commissioner’s Office’ have confirmed Wagner’s description of Gibson’s behavior,” Alderden wrote in the editorial, published on the county’s Web site.

Alderden also praised Wagner’s willingness “to participate in constructive dialogue” about public safety issues.

“While we may have ‘political’ differences, Commissioner Wagner has treated the Sheriff’s Office fairly and demonstrated a concern for the safety and welfare of our employees. The same can’t be said of the other commissioner at issue,” Alderden wrote.

He doesn’t pull many punches on Glenn Gibson.

That said, I must recall the infamous incident at the county fair in 2004 when he contacted the coroner to ask how I could be arrested. This was done after he confronted one of our Explorer Scouts who was passing out a letter from me concerning proposed budget cuts and asking for public input into the budget process. Commissioner Gibson reportedly berated the seventeen year old volunteer and used profane language, and demanded that he stop distributing the letter. The gentlemanly thing to do if he took exception to my publication would be to contact me directly. His demeanor was described as angry and that he exhibited a loss of self-control and acted unprofessionally. (Letter to the editor, August 28, 2004 by Lt. Robert Cook) This sounds exactly like what Ms. Wagner described and lends credibility to her accusations.

    1. Sheriff Jim Alderden. Sticking up for what’s right over party loyalty may be a difficult position in Larimer, but it’s very admirable.

  2. from your own camp–not good.

Personally, Sheriff Alderden is publicly saying what the rest of us have been hearing for years. Gibson’s inappropriate behavior isn’t exactly a well kept secret around Larimer County.

Kudos to the Sheriff for having the courage to publicly validate what Wagner said in her press release on Monday.

  3. Look at what Larimer GOP boss Ed Haynes is saying!

On Tuesday, Larimer County Republican Party Chairman Ed Haynes defended Gibson and said he was not concerned that Wagner’s accusations of verbal abuse toward her, staff members and the public could weaken Gibson’s viability as a candidate.

“You bet the party is going to support him. He’s going to run again and I’m gong to give him 100 percent support,” Haynes said.

“If driving off a weak-kneed Democrat from the county commissioners is what he did, then he’s heroic,” Haynes said. “Gibson has done absolutely nothing wrong and the party will stand behind him.”

    Such class.

    1. He put all his eggs in Commissioner Tom Bender’s re-election basket in 2004 and Bender got his ass handed to him on a plate by Wagner. Jeez Louise, talk about sour grapes.

Nothing quite like enabling an abuser by calling the victim “weak” and the abuser “heroic.”

Calling these guys clueless would be an insult to clueless people everywhere.

    2. Wagner is a “weak kneed Democrat”.  We need more Democrats who fight back!  According to reports that I read, one of the excanges happened in her office.  It will be a cold day in hell before anyone would berate me in MY office!  She should have kicked his ass out!  Slam the door in his face.  Whatever you do, don’t back down and don’t whine about it!

Perhaps she should have read this book:

      http://www.amazon.co

    3. Calling it heroic to make an elected official’s life so miserable that they resign? This guy would do great in Iraq.

Someone needs to tell Ed “bozo brain” Haynes that this is a Democracy, not a Thugocracy.

      1. Quiting because somebody made you upset or “miserable” speaks volumes to her values.  If she was really committed she could have filed a complaint.  She was weak-kneed regardless of her party and the people of the county deserve better.

          1. I wouldn’t say that he assualted her.  Just because someone got upset doesn’t mean they were assualted.  For crying out loud, she’s an adult, and an elected official.  If anyone should be able to stand up for her self, you would think it would be her.  I bet Doug Bruce is more of an ass than this guy, and you don’t see anyone resigning over him.

  4. Another woman from the commissioner’s office has resigned her post:

    http://www.reporterh
Angela Erker-Krizek, who was hired in September 2005 to fill the newly created position, resigned effective today.

She had been on administrative leave for a week and a half; Lancaster declined to say why.

“She volunteered to resign,” he said.

“It was time to move on.”
Was Krizek harassed by Gibson too? I heard she spent a great deal of time “working from home.” It was her first year there. Maybe she got a bad evaluation for shoddy work.

    1. I thought it was democratIC party, but democrat is the individual.

I know folks used to get jazzed by RR calling it the democrat party.  Personally I never cared, but what is the usage?

      1. It’s a Democratic (adjective) Ex-Commissioner, or the Democratic (adjective) Party, but this person or that person is a Democrat (noun).

As an aside (and a pet peeve), ballots usually use the term “Democrat” and not “Democratic” for the party name, but the official party name is the “Democratic” Party, and the question being asked – “to which party do you belong?” – requires a response similar to “I belong to the {adjective} party”.

So, first, there’s the grammar police to please.  Then there’s the Frank Luntz word-smithing to overcome; the word choice was polled, and using the incorrect (noun) usage in place of the adjective imparts a more negative reaction.

        1. I see the part of speach logic.

BTW have you read luntz’s book?  I think i’m going to pick it up yhis weekend.  I don’t like funding the enemy, but I like reading his playbook.

      2. Calling the party Democrat instead of Democratic is very intentional and done for increased negative perception.  Also diminished positive perception (not the same) as people get warm and fuzzy when they here the word “democratic” but not “democrat.”
