Udall Raises $1.1 Million

  • by: Colorado Pols

Democratic Senate candidate Mark Udall will report $1.1 million in raised funds for the second quarter, and a total of $2.5 million in ready cash. Needless to say, it’s a major success for Udall, though we’re waiting to see opponent Bob Schaffer’s results before we get too congratulatory.

Our sources predicted $500,000, which we thought would be a good start after a weak Q1. It appears we were sandbagged, and Udall got a really good start. Press release follows.

UDALL CAMPAIGN RELEASES INITIAL FUNDRAISING NUMBERS
A Strong Quarter Reflects Strong Support

(Westminster-CO) – Today, Udall for Colorado, Congressman Mark Udall’s (D-Eldorado Springs) U.S. Senate Campaign, announced its 2nd quarter 2007 fundraising totals.

“The Mark Udall for Colorado Campaign is pleased to announce that Mark Udall raised over $1.1 million during the 2nd Quarter of this year,” said Udall Campaign Manager Mike Melanson.  “Additionally, Mark will report nearly $2.5 million as cash on hand.”

“This impressive number reflects the early and deep support Mark Udall has earned in Colorado by doing things the right way, focusing on the challenges faced by middle class and working families and providing the kind of independent leadership Coloradans expect and deserve,” said Melanson.

“There is still a long way to go but Mark Udall is going to keep doing what he’s always done – work hard to find bipartisan solutions for Colorado families and provide strong, independent leadership for our state and our country,” said Melanson.

The financial reports are due July 15th and exact numbers will be available at that time.

  1. Doesn’t have to do too much to maintain a strong lead.

Schaffer did a great job clearing the GOP field, but come on, he is already behind the eight ball with Udall having $1 Mil already before Q-2 even started. If he can’t put up $1.5 Mil, this thing is already over.

    1. Mark can do the people’s business and run an effective campaign. While Bob is struggling to put together a campaign.

It’s going to be a rough “trinkle-down” year for the Republicans. Perhaps DickWad was right. The R’s will not have a serious opportunity to gain seats in Colorado until after 2008. I really do wish I made $160,000 to make dooming predictions. Wad is a little like Cleo!

    2. No matter what Schaffer does, this thing is FAR from over. Fundraising numbers are great, but folks need to remember that this is the NUMBER ONE senate race in the country. Schaffer could spend zero and still compete with Udall because of all of the independent and RSCC money that will come into Colorado.

(Yes, I realize that if Schaffer reports $100k or so raised, it might lower the race in terms of GOP priorities, similar to what happened late in the game in CD7, but I’m assuming that he’ll raise enough to be considered a serious candidate by those in DC.)

      1. In neglecting all the DSCC and other independent campaign money in support of Udall. If Udall has a 4:1 fundraising ratio over Schaffer, the Republicans will begin to second-guess Colorado as a red state to defend.

        1. Not going to happen.  Udall is doing great these are great numbers for him, but the repubs can turn on the fundraising machine.  I wouldn’t expect shaffer to be this far down for much longer.

          1. but we will see later this month. If he raises 1/4 of what Udall brought in, he’s going to be making a lot of calls reassuring potential donors that his neo-con message can win in Colorado. Or, perhaps he’ll begin “reorganizing” his staff like McCain.

      2. This quarter was about clearing the field.  Next quarter is about winning the election.  Expect Schaffer to do fine this quarter and to blow away next quarters records.

This is the #1 open Senate seat in ’08 and the R’s are not going to give it up easily.

    3. Have a pretty good source from outside Colorado telling me that Schaffer will be over $1M raised for the quarter.  I am very interested to see if this pans out…if it’s true then it’s going to be a very interesting race.  Hold tight everyone!

    1. With the money all the Presidential candidates have been raising, plus the money pulled in by some of the Senate candidates this past quarter, I’m thinking the networks should just cancel their shows starting in September and run an all profit, all the time network of candidate advertisements.

            1. It’s great.  I get a lot done.

But if you could pay for cable by the channel, I would totally get the history channel, the discovery channel, and the military channel.

Oh, and all the C-Spans I could get

              1. should offer a “Wonk TV” package.  I’d take C-SPAN 1-535 if they were offered, plus the various learning channels and the weather channel.  Then throw in SciFi and one or two others and I’d be happy.

I so wish I didn’t have to pay the major cable producers for crap like The Junk Shopping Channel and Religion-in-a-can.

                1. I would buy “Wonk T.V. Package” in a heart beat.  They should do “Kidz Wonk” as well…

Dang good idea.  I like it so much I might even write the cable company and pass that along..

                2. I hate TV, don’t watch it and consider myself lucky especially during election time. I would buy wonk TV in a heartbeat, though.  They could even develop a regional wonk news show to highlight the various politics of the West, the heartland, the South and the East.

          1. I think we’re like the 26th largest media market.  I wouldn’t exactly be shooting off pop-rockets over this.  But, then again, being the law-obeying citizen that I am, I wouldn’t be shooting off pop-rockets anyway.

            1. Actually, Denver is 18th, out of 210. Not shabby. I think “major market” in media terms is top-20 or top-25. Denver qualifies.

The Springs/Pueblo market is right in the middle at 94th out of 210. Obviously not major-market.

And, yes, Virginia, there is a third media market in Colorado: Grand Junction / Montrose, which is toward the bottom at 186th place. (also, I think a few counties in the SW may technically be in the Albuquerque market)

              Details at: http://www.avsforum….

  2. Looks like Marky Mark has pretty much sewn this bad boy up.  No chance of winning here.  Republicans, let’s throw in the towel.  This is done.  Fin.  Ooooovvver.

          1. Frankly, that’s bullshit. We Californians conquered this state long ago. We saved Colorado’s economy from the oil bust and married all their hot women (I’ve been here for 20 years and it’s God’s honest truth). We’re the only ones Coloradans hate more than Texans, but they don’t bitch when their house gets appraised do they?

            God damn, that felt good.

            (fetches non-Coors product)

            1. I think Texans are more despised by Coloradans that Californians.

And historically speaking, we’ve been closely allied with Californians rather than Texans. During the Civil War one company of Colorado volunteers, who marched through a blizzard to defend Fort Union, fought off an entire Texan brigade  who retreated from the West.

              1. CA = growth, congestion, high prices, crappy archecture, changed culture

TX = limited growth, southern CO benefits, silly hats, good football, compatable western culture

Historically CO may be more tied to CA, but in modern times, Californians have done more to change the face of CO than TX ever has.

                    1. As a compromise we can also keep the eastcoast trustifarians out as well.
