Lone Democrat Larimer Commissioner Resigns

  • by: Colorado Pols

As the AP reports:

Larimer County Commissioner Karen Wagner resigned today, citing “harassment and verbal abuse” from fellow Commissioner Glenn Gibson.

In a letter to county voters, Wagner also accused Commissioner Kathay Rennels of failing to intervene in the alleged mistreatment…

Rennels described Gibson as outspoken and Wagner as sensitive.

She said Gibson had not treated Wagner differently than he treated others, including Rennels…

In her letter, Wagner, the only Democrat on the three-member board of commissioners, accused Gibson of creating a “hostile workplace that impairs my physical health.”

Wagner’s letter gave few specifics but said on June 26 Gibson had “launched two assaults of irrational histrionics not worthy of a county commissioner.”

    1. Gibson said he does not recall hitting the table. Sometimes getting one’s point across requires “play acting” but that is not the same a losing control, he said.

Definitely sounds like someone making excuses for what he did…

      1. Here’s how Glenn Gibson explains away his outrageous behavior:

Gibson said he does not recall hitting the table. Sometimes getting one’s point across requires “play acting” but that is not the same a losing control, he said.

“What I do and say is carefully calculated,” he said.

Sounds like this guy is not playing with a full deck.

Even Larimer’s Republican good ol’ boy sheriff is saying, “I’ve heard those kind of stories, but I have never witnessed that side of him.”

        Ouch.

  1. There have been complaints, behind the scenes, for years regarding his inappropriate behavior and his outbursts.

So sorry to see Karen leave but can’t say I blame her. There are more important things in life than being forced to work daily with a witless bully.

    1. Back in the late 70’s, and through the 80’s, Larimer had LOADS of fighting going on as F.C. and Loveland grew in size and influence. I imagine with all the political fighting that was brought occured nationally over the last 6 years, that Larimer did the same.

      1. Commissioners in smaller counties make maybe 25-35k per year where the metro county commissioners can top 100k I believe.
They get paid to sit in the hot seat and be bothered at every restaurant they eat at it seems like!

    1. Betty Markey could run for the vacant County Commission. She seems to be well known and liked in Larimer County. This would also avoid a disastrous primary in the Congressional race.

      1. Since there was a resignation of a democrat, the Democratic Party of the County will convene and select candidates for the County Commissioners to select from. The new commissioner must be from the same political party as the retiree. We will see how things shake up from here!

        1. As a county party officer I sit on all of the vacancy committees in Denver county so I am pretty up on how vacancies are handled. There are definitely campaigns. They are very quick though, a mad dash to round up committee members as supporters.

  2. If his behavior is inexcusable, so is hers!  She was elected by her constituents to do a job–she has let them down by buckling under to a bully.

If his “assaults of irrational histrionics are not worthy of a county commissioner”, her response is just as unworthy.

      1. I’d like to hear the details on that one.  If a shouting match or two endangers your health you shouldn’t be anywhere near politics in the first place.

        1. Rennels said it best, “Gibson is outspoken, Wagner is sensitive”.

Now Karen can go back to her real estate investments and do what she does best.

    1. If it was that bad, she should have pressed charges.  But if getting “yelled” at endangers your health, so you give up, the people would be better served by someone with thicker skin.

  3. If she was fed up with the position and wasn’t going to run for reelection when her term was up in 2008, this could be seen as a good strategic move for the Dems.  They now get an incumbent in the 2008 race instead of an open seat.
