CD 2 Democrats and Pride snapshot

As a GLBT Democrat in Colorado I have to say I am truly impressed with the Polis Campaign early on. All Three Dems running for CD 2 are fine choices but for the GLBT Community Polis really has shown his commitment this weekend.

The Colorado Pridefest was this weekend for those who did not know. One of the largest street fairs in Colorado as well as a massive parade. All three Democrats from CD 2 walked in Pride as well as Betsy Markey, Diana Degette and other elected officials.

The difference in the support in the Community for Jared was quite clear as well as the organization he has built already.  While Joan rode in a car, waved and danced like an off key white gal to we are family with 2 people to carry her banner and Will Shafroth walked in the parade alone. Jared Polis had a massive show of support.

Jared Polis had the largest group within the Democrat parade block. With 30 marchers, candy give aways, t’shirts, stickers and a number of other fun things.  Jared crisscrossed the street back and fourth to personally talked to voters and was greeted with cheers and people chanting his name for the parade.

The other difference I noticed was the Jared Polis Camp was the only candidate running to have a booth as well as stick around and shake hands.  Both days his booth was staffed with volunteers and had a line of people signing up for his site.

Jared played to a crowd that is quickly lining up behind Jared and is going to work hard to help get him elected to Congress. I have to say

I am truly disappointed in Fitz-Gerald camp and Joan herself for not shaking hands nor having a booth. Within the democratic party, the GLBT Community makes up 16% of the primary vote as well as the second most loyal voting block to the party.

    1. Of course Jared is going to have a lot of support during Pridefest because if elected he will be the first openly gay Representative in US History.

However, Joan has done a lot over the years to support the GLBT community, for instance sponsoring the Ref I Bill!

Again, I look at the candidate’s record of commitment to all issues in respect to voting for who I believe is more qualified for the job. While Jared may get a lot of support from the GLBT communtiy for being gay and running, I still think Joan has done more as an elected official to further the GLBT civil rights cause.

I wouldn’t hold it against her for riding in a car during a parade, especially when it was over 100 degrees outside yesterday. And ask yourself this, just 30 years ago how many candidates would have even showed up for the pridefest parade?

        1. He doesn’t live in Colorado, so i don’t see how this affects him. He also was elected to office before being openly gay. While I can’t say for sure how many pride parade Barney has marched in, I still think years ago you wouldn’t have seen numerous candidates in the pride parade, let alone 3.

            1. Though, it was Gerry Studds (D-MA) who was first, not Frank.  Studds constituents knew he was gay long before the page scandal in 1983, so, it seems to me he would be first.

      1. I never said Joan was poor on LGBT rights at all… I was just trying to point out Jared has a larger support within the community as well as a much stronger volunteer core to pull that off at this point in time.

        1. You said, “I am truly disappointed in Fitz-Gerald camp and Joan herself for not shaking hands nor having a booth. Within the democratic party, the GLBT Community makes up 16% of the primary vote as well as the second most loyal voting block to the party.”

As if by not doing the exact same as Jared at the Pride Parade, she is going to lose all the support she has worked for over the past decades. I find it insulting to think that Joan’s efforts for the GLBT community are meaningless, because she didn’t set up a booth.

I’m sorry, I just find that to be a hollow argument.

  1. I have been sick all weekend (and still nursing an un-earned hangover on Monday morning). This is the first Pridefest I have missed since 1989.

Since I wasn’t there I won’t comment on the CD2 candidates which is what started this thred, but I would love to hear how well (or not) the other politicos were represented.

  2. If attending a pride parade is the determinent on GLBT bona fides, is landing on an aircraft carrier under a “mission accomplished” banner the determinent for foriegn policy/military/vet bona fides?

That is basically the arguement you are making.

Full disclosure: I do have a problem with JP over his ham handed handling of A41.

  3. Get a grip, Deminator. There are better ways to spend campaign money, unless of course you are self funding and can afford all that jazz to cover up for lack of substance!

Joan Fitz-Gerald has been a champion for the gay community even when she represents a rural mountain district. She brokered hate crimes legislation and convinced the former republican governor to sign it. She put Referendum I on last year’s ballot which would have established domestic partnerships in the first heartland state. Just this year she pushed second parent adoption and anti-workplace discrimination through the legislature and it was signed by the governor.

And by the way, there are hundreds of other issues that affect the general population where Fitz-Gerald’s expertise towers over Polis.

    1. Gotta love those “experienced” career politicians. I’m sure they represent regular folk rather than special interests. Oh wait…I have that backwards. “Experienced” is just another word for someone beholden to special interests.
