We almost missed this one, but it’s fitting in our discussion below on possible intelligent design legislation that former Representative and candidate for U.S. Senate Bob Schaffer has been appointed to the Colorado Board of Education. From the Rocky Mountain News:
Former U.S. Rep. Bob Schaffer was named to the Colorado Board of Education on Tuesday. He replaces Clair Orr, who said this month that he was stepping down from the seat, which represents the 4th Congressional District on the state school board.
The board oversees academic standards and annual achievement tests. It also decides appeals of charter school applications made to local boards of education.
Schaffer was appointed by the 4th District Republican vacancy committee. He represented the 4th District in Congress from 1997 to 2003. The district covers Fort Collins, Greeley and most of the eastern plains counties.
Schaffer noted that he helped write the No Child Left Behind Act when he was in Congress – then voted against it when amendments gave more control over education to the federal government. The act comes up for reauthorization in 2007, and Congress will be seeking comments from state boards of education, Schaffer said. He plans to tell Congress to give states a bigger role in assessing student achievement.

Bob will do a great job to bring much need accountability to the board. This is good for Colorado.
No Child Left Behind Act – No he will drive the school system even deeper into being underfunded and understaffed to reach goals.
Good job there tiger. No Child Left Behind Act – should be called. Leave no White Rich Kid behind
Demantor, I think you misunderstand. Although Schaffer was one of the key people who came up with No Child Left Behind, he voted against it after the likes of Ted Kennedy and his comrades got their hands on it. It bears no resemblence to the legislation he initially worked on.
s/Ted Kennedy/George W. Bush/g
NCLB’s intrusions have had little to do with Democrats; Kennedy swore off the whole idea after Dubya decided not to fund it properly, and the GOP House hasn’t let the Dems near darned nigh anything in several years.
Is he still the state republican chair?
National Committeeman, actually. Bob Martinez is the State Chairman.
Demanator, the White Rich Kids are already not left behind. The CEA and the NEA should spend more time with the other kids teaching reading and writing and arithmetic, and less time with self-esteem. The basic difference between the private schools of the Rich White Kids and the public schools of the CEA is that those White Kids learn these things, and the CEA-taught kids have lots of self-esteem and are seldom dissed in Canon City.

I wonder where Real Deal, I mean Rob O’Regan is? I figured he would have posted.
Schaffer runs one of Alex Cranberg’s pro voucher organizations. Schaffer is an advocate for spending tax dollars for tuition to private and religious schools. The Colorado Supreme Court ruled that unconstitutional a couple years ago. ( an aside: do state board members take an oath to uphold the Constitution?) Being a voucher advocate would raise the conflict of interest question every time an issue, directly or indirectly, involving vouchers comes before the State Board.
How exactly did this appointment get done so quickly and quietly?
Orr acted surprised, this deal has been known for weeks…..
This was a deal where Owens appointed Orr to a water post so the vacancy committee could put Schaffer in to hold the seat next November. The Repubs want to control the state board next cycle.
No Child Left Behind has been a smashing success – particularly in St. Vrain Valley School District. Funny how we had the head of the Boulder Valley Republican Party on the board for years and they ended up with a $14,000,000 budget ‘error’ – so much for ‘fiscal responsibility’. As for Accountability, why is it that teachers have voting seats on the committee that votes for school accreditation? SHAM. The resounding defeat of the recent mil levy was the taxpayers saying ‘NO’ to more Republican trough-gorging (as in construction companies getting fat on contracts and old-boys selling off crappy land parcels for top dollar).
It’s ALL about the money folks – and maintaining the ‘physical plant’ of the state’s school districts is a lucrative scam. Follow the money, find the Republicans, find the corruption.
