Polis Hires Campaign Manager

  • by: Colorado Pols

As Colorado Confidential reports:

Jared Polis has hired political veteran Wanda James to manage his campaign for the Democratic nomination for Congress from  CD-2.

James, who owns the consulting firm James Foxx Communications, ran Jay Fawcett’s effort in Colorado’s 5th Congressional District in the last election cycle. Fawcett was defeated by Doug Lamborn in the heavily Republican district.

James graduated from the University of Colorado in 1986, then served as a U.S. Navy officer for five years after graduation. She started her consulting firm in California, moving back to Colorado three years ago. She and her husband own the Eight Rivers Caribbean Restaurant in Highlands.

We’re not sure what to make of this hire, which had been rumored for weeks. James has developed a good reputation over the last two years, but she’s also lost the last two races she’s managed (Jay Fawcett in CD-5 and Darrell Watson for Denver City Council). This is no knock on James, but with Polis’ personal wealth, he could have hired one of the top Democratic operatives in the country to manage his congressional bid – somebody who had pulled off a couple of big wins recently.

  1. Anyone have some insight here?

It seemed to me that Jay ran a solid campaign in district that was heavily registered Republican so I’d guess James would be a good choice.

  2. I guess but not I don’t really know anything bout her.  Kinda surprising he picked some one so lite on CO background, but whatever.

        1. Why don’t you elaborate now? It’s not really a big splash as much as a big let down if you just trickle out information here and there and say “figure it out for yourselves… or let them eat cake!”

          Comprende?

            1. I’m sorry that doesn’t really impress me.  CD-5 is way different then CD-2 and none of denominators points inculded a CO victory.

                    1. Hefly won by 71% in 04 and he was a popular incumbent.  Lamborn was not nearly as well known or liked in the district and was fighting the uphill democratic tidal wave of 2006 and he still spanked Jay with 60%.  All I’m saying is that for Jared’s money he could do a lot better.

                    2. Mtn Man,

I am sorry but Wanda did an amazing job. What could have jay done if he raised 2 or 3 million. Wanda gets what moves voters, gets headlines and gets the swing voters.

  3. I liked Jay Fawcett but his campaign didn’t exactly set the world on fire…I prefer Senator JFG for that seat. No secret.

  4. spending money isn’t serious–raising money is.

There is still a lot of bad blood over 41 and I will be surprised if he can raise money. He may self fund like he did for the state board, but that doesn’t indicate support.

    1.   To finance his campaign, he just needs to stop at the ATM machine.  Isn’t that how he financed his Bd. of Ed race in 2000?
Leave the glorified panhandling to Joan FitzGerald and Will Shafroth.

      1. If people won’t give you $10.00 then you don’t have much in the way of support. Raising money is about more than pulling in the bucks.

That’s one of the things that amazed me about my mom’s campaigns – she would get a ton of donations from $10.00 up to the max.

It’s a major indicator of support. I would say Polis’ advantage is if he can get a boatload of $10.00 donations he doesn’t need the $2,300.00 donations because the small ones show breadth of support. But donations matter.

  5. Wanda did a really good job.  I met her at Dem convention in Greeley last summer.  She is tough AND smart.  That doesn’t mean there were not mistakes in Fawcett campaign, there were.  But, she is early in this career.

  6. What are you talking about!!!  Let us take a look at Wanda can bring to the table. I think Wanda was the best hire that Jared could have made. ( I am a Wanda James Fan)

    1. – Fawcett Race… Under her leadership Jay Fawcett Raised more money than any dem ever in cd 5. Was on the front page of the Denver Post 2 times, landed endorsments that others including Bill Winter did not and made the VP and Club for Growth spend over a million dollars in the last week of the race.  Making that race close shows Wanda knows what she is doing.

    2. She understands Media, Finance, Voter Contact and can help pull in support from around the US for Jared. Wanda has risen to one of the most well respected folks in Colorado Politics and she was the perfect hire in Jared’s Race.

    3. 8 Rivers is outstanding – 🙂

    4. She has a background as a manager, there are so many ” Managers” here who dont know how to get anything done. Wanda will push the Polis for Congress Campaign to the forefront in cd2.

    5. If you dont think she rocks you are crazy.  🙂

    1. But this is going to be an uphill fight for Polis.  I think less because of 41, and more because he will struggle (as will Shafroth) to be viewed as the best candidate.  Fitz-Gerald plays for keeps and has big time ability.

Wanda knew what she was getting into with Darrel Watson, so I feel like that’s a loss.  She did some great stuff with Fawcett – he claims he would have won as a Republican, I wonder why he even bothers thinking that.  The truth is that the registration advantage there (CD-5) was too overwhelming; that does not discount her work though.  She managed that thing tremendously, Lamborn was easy prey and she stayed right on him.

Expect Joan and her crew to keep rocking up the ladder, and Wanda to get a prominent position on a presidential.

    2. As doing “better than expected” on losing race after losing race.

With that said – I think the Fawcett race was about as well run as any so good luck to her. It will be interesting to see what she can do with Polis.

    1. JFG hired a woman who is former union organizer and ran one of the denver city council races, nut her name escapes me right now.
