As the AP reports:
Democratic presidential hopeful Bill Richardson returned to Colorado on Thursday to raise money and court Western support, hoping it will help him break out of the pack of second-tier candidates.
The New Mexico governor is hoping his Western roots and Hispanic heritage will pay off in a region that has swung Democratic.
“The West is my political base in my race for president,” Richardson said in a news conference after his plane landed at Centennial Airport.
Richardson said Colorado will be a key state now that it has joined the second wave of major primaries Feb. 5 and said he plans to spend more time campaigning in the region.
He said Colorado and the West share crucial issues such as water, land use, transportation, growth and immigration…
Independent political consultant Eric Sondermann said Richardson is spending more time in Colorado rather than Iowa and New Hampshire because he is hoping his support in the West will help him break into the first tier of Democratic candidates.
“That strategy is a very regional campaign. Anything you do when you are in the second tier is a gamble. You’re standing on the golf course, holding a golf club, hoping lightning strikes. Most of the time it doesn’t,” Sondermann said.
A poll follows.

Yes. Will he??? Probably not.
He’s more qualified than most of the candidates, and certainly Barack Obama. But substance isn’t a part of our election process, and hasn’t been for a long time — as evidenced by this blog, which is far more interested in the horse race than the prize.
is to make himself appealing enough to the three in the first tier to become a viable pick for VP. With his wealth of experience as a governor, US Rep., and stint of Secretary of Energy, he brings a hell of alot to the table, not to mention his potential appeal to Hispanic voters.
It’s a game Richardson can play because he has gravitas (in stark contrast to “Three-Term Tom”).
These comments about a regional (rather than national) power base seems to support that argument.
The only way Richardson can break into the top tier is for Edwards to flop. Judging by his performance in the last debate, and the fact he didn’t have his breast cancer pin on, Edwards is desperate and his campaign is floundering for lack of message and any real inspiration or spark.
is going to become a real distraction politically. She is a lot more ill than they let on, and at some point Edwards is just going to be too emotionally and physically exhausted to really continue campaigning.
It’s very sad. I hope her treatment is successful.
Everytime I hear him talk, I have to wonder why he’s even running. I was listening to the radio the other morning and I heard him make a comment about gay marriage where he said that though he doesn’t agree with it, it wouldn’t be his place as president to impose his will on other people.
What kind of response is that? Seriously?? What a joke. One good thing about the front loaded schedule is that an Edwards win in Iowa won’t mean nearly as much as it used to….
Some election years Richardson would look like a pretty good candidate, but this time, we Dems have a wealth of excellent candidates, and Richardson doesn’t have an opening. Even if one of our top three stumbles, there’s still the other two. He might make a good VP choice.
I like the Gov., but his debate performance has been weak, and there is a wealth of strong candidates. If an opening is created in the 1st tier, I suspect Gore might reconsider and enter in the fall which still keeps the Gov. out. Bill has Veep written all over him.
with both. I see Gore getting in and re-defining the race, and Richardson being his VP because of his resume and because of the West.
I always want Richardson to come off well and generate some excitement when I see him in debates or on the talking head circuit but he just doesn’t. Too bad because he’s far and away the most qualified of all the Presidential candidates on both sides of the aisle. He’d be a great VP for a less experienced but more more exciting candidate like Obama. As for joining Gore, I keep hearing that if he runs, it ought to be a Gore/Obama ticket. A lot of people think that would be unbeatable.
I’m not sure Bill Richardson would really be content with being V.P., esp. V.P. under H.R.C.
Is there any constitutional or statutory prohibition against an elected V.P. being appointed (subject to Senate confirmation) to serve as Sec. of State (or some other cabinet post) at the same time?
That might be an arrangement Richardson might find attractive. (It would probably be a good idea for him to renounce one of the two salaries associated with the two positions.)
Did anyone else see him on meet the press two weeks ago? Tim Russert ate him for lunch. At one point Richardson was fondling his coffee mug because he did not know what to say.
He has the best resume out there, defiantly vp or sos for the nominee.
Does anyone else wish that candidates would announce their ideal cabinets before the election?
but it wont be because of his western support it will be because everyone else shoots themselves in the foot.
SOOOOO qualified, so visionary, and plays well with others. Perhaps even a little TOO well. As much as I respect him ( which is a lot) I have trouble with his womanizing ( i won’t even bother with an “alleged”). As a former New Mexican, lemme tell ya, the Governor has quite a reputation for being a ladies’ man. I find that kind of behavior at this level of the game to be reckless. I only have room in my life for one womanizing Democrat and that’s Bill Clinton. Bill Richardsn ain’t no Bill Clinton, that’s for sure.
But it’s always presented as his being a little too touchy feely and/or making crude remarks. So let me ask a former New Mexican…. are there known infidelities, serious scandals, that are going to come out if he gets much farther? Because your right. He doesn’t have that old Bill Clinton magic to get past that kind of thing and win. Besides, Dems REALLY don’t want to have to deal with bimbo eruptions this time around if it can be avoided. Gore, Edwards and Obama; none of them seem to present that kind of potential problem.
Not only do they not care about a candidate’s sex life, it’s fully expected that a (male)candidate has a mistress. No boxers or briefs questions, just “What are you going to do about….” And an 85% voter turnout. We could do a lot worse than be like the French, Bill O’Reilly be damned.
Presidential candidates have to be a “Type A” personality which probably has more drive to be sexual than most.
Just imagine Margaret Thatcher making eyes at you…..
