Coffman Keeps Digging, Keeps Sinking

Republican Secretary of State Mike Coffman just keeps digging his own grave.  Apparently Coffman’s new motto is “Do As I Say, Not As I Do. Or, Really, Not as I Say.”

According to Colorado Confidential:

Just one day after issuing a stringent set of rules restricting political activities by employees of his office, Republican Secretary of State Mike Coffman was the featured speaker at a Mesa County Republican Party event in Grand Junction.

“If it’s an event where money is raised, the Party controls where that money goes,” says Jonathan Tee, spokesperson for the secretary of state’s office. “The Secretary feels like that is perfectly legitimate.”

Coffman wants to remove the stigma that his office is politically-tainted, and he tries to do this by placing political restrictions on his employees. But then he says that he has no problem raising money for the Republican Party and claims that not all of the rules for his employees apply to him.

This should turn out well.

  1. from the SoS website:

PROHIBITED POLITICAL ACTIVITIES [for SoS employees]:

Publicly endorse or oppose, or actively work for or against a candidate for a partisan office, a political party, a statewide ballot initiative or a referendum.

    . . .

Coffman has also placed himself under tighter political restrictions.

“I believe it is important for the Secretary of State, as the state’s chief elections official, to be held to the same high standards; so I will adhere to the same restrictions regarding endorsing or contributing to partisan candidates, statewide referendums and ballot initiatives.”

    [Back to me, Cuervo:]

So, according to Coffman, his employees may not “publicly endorse” or “actively work for . . . a political party.”  But he will continue to do so, apparently.  He’s drawn a distinction between supporting a “partisan candidate” (which he says he won’t do) and supporting a “political party” (which he will do, apparently).

    What a tangled web….

  2. also got a column in the Springs Gazette to pimp the Iraq war. Sean Paige at the Gazette said Coffman promised him he wouldn’t use it as a platform for his SoS campaign.

But wouldn’t you know — every time I saw Mike campaign he raised his awesome accomplishments in Iraq as qualifications for SoS. (It’s not quite exactly the same offense, but it was very convenient for both of them.)

  3. OK Dave, the weekend open thread is over.

And here is the “good” guy keeping up with bad appearance. TO be honest, I am not opposed to politicians doing things like this (it is an open and above board fund raiser). But he is trying to make it sound  like the SOS does not having ethical issues while at the same time disregarding his own rules.

This is NOT just about bad judgment. As I mentioned to Dave in an earlier post, it should be OBVIOUS to those in the CS world, that Coffman had reports to know what was happening (or is totally incompetent). This is why I oppose the republican party. It is no longer an opposition party. It is simply a party of corrupt individuals.

    1. Ok, we’ve got another Republican who deserves to be kicked out. What is going on here – is it the water they all drink? Or has listening to Fox News given them all severe brain damage?

This is awful. We need some honest Republican officeholders. We can’t be a Democracy with only one party. Please – someone…

      1. will do that to a person.

That having been said, we need some honest Democrat officeholders, particularly in the judiciary.  They appear to be in exceedingly short supply, as well….

  4. It gets better. Apparently our SoS is on some kind of tour:

Secretary of state featured at GOP luncheon
    By Coloradoan staff

Reservations are due by Tuesday for the Larimer County Republican Club luncheon on Wednesday.

Secretary of State Mike Coffman will talk about his ideas for what needs to be accomplished.

Cost of the lunch is $9 per person and will be held at the Elks Club, 140 E. Oak St., Fort Collins. You do not need to be a member of the Republican Club to attend.

For reservations call 482-1840 and leave a message.

Just what does need to be accomplished?

    1. It isn’t a political event.  It’s open to anyone who wants to donate $9 to the Republican Party.

But, seriously, is anyone suggesting that every single elected official should start steering clear of every event connected even tangentially to their party?  Or is this just a special set of rules for the politicians certain people dislike?

    1. To bad Gordon was to much of a gentleman to bring that up during.  If he had he could be SOS right now and none of this would be an issue.

  5. OK, I’m no big fan of Coffman, but seriously, he’s an elected Republican officeholder. If Confidential caught him in a contradiction with the policy for staff, then so be it, gotcha. But taking this to an extreme (which Confidential already appears to be doing), he won’t even be able to “endorse” himself if he runs for re-election. That’s asurd.

Sounds like he’s establishing a Hatch Act blanket on staff. It’s about time. But that doesn’t, nor should it, apply to elected officials.

  6. So now the Secretary of State isn’t an elected office?

This is a completely contrived “scandal”, folks.  The Secretary of State doesn’t give up his/her right to freedom of speech or association when he/she takes office.  It’s one thing for an employee, it’s a far different matter for an elected official, as all federal and state legislation on this matter has borne out (see the Hatch act).  Government employees are routinely barred from contributing or endorsing.  Elected officials are not.

Trying to make a scandal out of an elected official speaking at a Lincoln Day Dinner?  That’s pretty weak stuff.  Every county clerk goes to their Jefferson/Jackson or Lincoln Day Dinners.  Many get to say a few words.  They’re elected officials who oversee the integrity of elections (and are far closer to the action than the Secretary of State).  Should they all be barred from attending?  Speaking?  How about summer picnics?  Heck, what about when Mike Coffman gets into his military uniform?  Is that “over the line?”

    1. Since when do elected officials stop speaking at party functions?  Sounds like another CC spin that Col Pols is more than happy to promote.

      1. I don’t have a problem with Coffman attending these functions – but he just issued rules prohibiting his staff from doing the same, and the rules don’t appear to have an exemption for Coffman himself.

Still, this is a mountain out of a molehill; he already has other problems worse than this…

      2. He’s an elected official, so he’s supposed to never attend another Lincoln Day Dinner?  “Digging his own grave”, what an overstatement!
