Giuliani Cruises To Victory With Gay Republicans

It will be interesting to see if this presidential endorsement gets downplayed, backpedaled, or even used against its recipient south of the Mason-Dixon line, as local AP reporter Colleen Slevin reports:

Rudy Giuliani emerged as a favorite among many members of the GOP’s largest gay organization; they cited his record on social issues, taxes and defense.

However, delegates to the Log Cabin Republicans annual convention in Denver said Friday they also fear that the former New York mayor, in his bid to capture the Republican presidential nomination, might be waffling as he reaches out to the more conservative GOP voters who hold sway in the primaries.

“Mainstream Republican voters and moderate voters are going to vote for you. Don’t tilt to the right,” said Frank Ricchiazzi, who helped found the Log Cabin group 30 years ago.

Ricchiazzi, who wore an “I Love Rudy” button, cited Giuliani’s remarks on abortion during the GOP presidential candidates’ debate Thursday night…

Following the GOP’s losses in the November elections, in both Congress and the statehouses, many gay Republicans said they believe the party should strive to select a candidate who doesn’t focus on divisive social issues. [Pols emphasis]

Former Republican Sen. Alan Simpson, of Wyoming, the event’s keynote speaker, agreed. He told the group of about 200 that he thinks the party is in a better place than it was after delving into issues such as the Terri Schiavo right-to-life case and gay marriage.

“We’re shaking some of the goofies and zanies out of the trees,” Simpson said to laughter.

  1. This little fluff piece buries the fact that a NATIONAL “convention” of this agenda-driven group could only attract 200 people. They may as well go. The Republican Party won’t even miss them.

    1. I guess you do not understand what Log Cabin can bring. Log Cabin are a fundraising machine, they have a very large base of 2300 dollar checks and it also shows that there is some hope that the repubs will not pick a right wing nut or a useless old war vet.

      1. We’ve all seen the influence this powerful Republican gay group has brought to bear over the past decade.  You must be joking. They make about as much sense as Jewish neo-nazis.  And, yes there are a few of those poor self-loathing souls, too.

    2. Poor Marilyn Rizzo. It must not be fun to subscribe to a political outlook (hard right homophobia) that’s headed for the dustbin of history.

    1.   Rudy has indeed started to do the Potomac Two Step, but no more than any of his competitors.
Hillary declined to take issue with the general who called homosexuality immoral some weeks back until she flip flopped and then said she disagreed. (Big of her…..)
McCain opposed the federal marriage amendment but supported the unsuccessful state constitutional amendment banning same sex mariage in Arizona.
John Edwards candidly said that he did not agree with same sex marriage at this time but left open the possibility of changing his position over time.
And of course, the most shameless flip flopper was Multiple Choice Mitt who only 12 short years ago promised to out gay rights Ted Kennedy.
Giuliani is in good company.  At least Sam Brownback and Mike Huckabee are consistent in their positions……

      1. Giuliani’s abortion question response has to be the  lamest, limpest response of both the D and R debates combined.  It would be “OK” with him if the court upheld Roe vs Wade? Or not? What-me-worry? Dunno, who cares? Impressive, Rudi.

  2. Simpson is talking about is the Republican State Party then they will look like a Charlie Brown Christmas tree by the time he gets all of them shook out.
