We hear that conservative Rocky Mountain News columnist and editorial writer Peter Blake will accept a buyout offer from the paper and retire. This would be a blow to Republicans in Colorado, because Blake writes almost exclusively from a conservative viewpoint.

Why does the RMN want to dump Blake? I don’t read his column, so I can’t comment on it. Have too many others joined me in not reading his column, I wonder?
…that the Rocky is cutting staff. Buyouts are a pretty typical first step to minimize layoffs.
Aah yes, here it is:

Blake qualified on both counts. Wouldn’t be surprising to see him take the buyout and continue writing for somebody else or for the Rocky on a periodic basis (they’d get his content without having to pay his benefits).
Hardlly.
Mildly interesting. Little to no enterprise reporting.
the print newspaper is bleeding cash. Someone has to go. I’m going to guess that blake is an overpaid windbag. Maybe Capitalism DOES work!!
Sounds positively socialist to me.
Blake is 70 years old. He’s done more political reporting and column writing than anyone alive in this town. He can retire if he wants to. Never thought of him as conservative, just cantankerous. He’s a real piece of work that won’t be replicated anytime soon.
Gimme an ever loving break. He has, by now, top tier Social Security, a pension from the Nooze, and Medicare. He needs more? Time to make room for someone younger (the premise of SS, getting workers to retire.)
I never thought of him as particularly conservative, either.
Peter Blake has been the best of breed for years. Don’t know if he was conservative, but he was insightful and suspicious of government, which is good and a perspective that is needed more than it is offered. The hardcopy media is heading to its place alongside blacksmiths and Fuller Brush men.
As they have shut their bureaus all over the world and their role as gadfly (I don’t know how you quantify that) they have lost readers. Self inflicted wounds, even without the earthquake of the internet.
