The Myth of Voter Fraud

  • by: bobster1

Like Saddam and WMD, one of the dearest right-wing myths is that hordes of (mostly minority) illegal voters are flooding the polls.

A NY Times investigation has revealed just the opposite –
h/t to the Washington Monthly summary:

“So in four years of concerted effort, the Bush Justice Department managed to come up with maybe half a dozen cases of actual voter fraud. In other words, two or three per election cycle. Mostly in rural districts for low-level offices. And because of this, we’re supposed to believe that it’s a high priority to spend millions of dollars on voter ID laws that plainly do nothing except make it harder for poor people to vote.”

In 5-Year Effort, Scant Evidence of Voter Fraud
By ERIC LIPTON and IAN URBINA

WASHINGTON, April 11 – Five years after the Bush administration began a crackdown on voter fraud, the Justice Department has turned up virtually no evidence of any organized effort to skew federal elections, according to court records and interviews.

Although Republican activists have repeatedly said fraud is so widespread that it has corrupted the political process and, possibly, cost the party election victories, about 120 people have been charged and 86 convicted as of last year.

Most of those charged have been Democrats, voting records show. Many of those charged by the Justice Department appear to have mistakenly filled out registration forms or misunderstood eligibility rules, a review of court records and interviews with prosecutors and defense lawyers show.

…In Pakistan, Usman Ali is trying to rebuild his life after being deported from Florida, his legal home of more than a decade, for improperly filling out a voter-registration card while renewing his driver’s license.

  1. Nope, it’s election fraud and voter suppression that is the problem — far more serious and a specialty among Republicans.

But this NY Times story reminded me of the weird Newsletter that Bob Balink, the El Paso Clerk/Recorder, sent out just prior to the election last year.

    CoCo story here.

    Why was Bob so worried?

    1. There’s a difference between “voter fraud” – fraud committed by voters – and “election fraud” – fraud committed upon the election process.

Republicans cry “voter fraud” because it gives them cover to weed out the lower margins of society – the poor and under-educated who do not have the ability or knowledge to respond effectively to disenfranchisement tactics that we’ve seen in recent years.

Democrats cry “election fraud” because of these disenfranchisement tactics, and when we see other kinds of abuses – moving polling places without adequate notice; distributing misleading information about voting times, places, and regulations; electronic voting machine programming changed without proper verification…

There’s a big difference between the two.

        1. Phoenix…perhaps more tha any other contributor on this blog…is logical, consistent, reasonable and backs up his/her positions with facts and/or legal precedent. Cheap shot. You can do better.

          1. I certainly wouldn’t say all repubs or all dems do anything, yet thats the agrument he’s making.  I don’t those kinda generalities and do anybody any good and he should be called out for it.

            1. I won’t dignify it by calling it Republican because his brand of politics is in its own warped category.

But, it’s a fact that under his direction the Republican party has actively pursued, and spent money, on bogus charges of voter fraud to discourage minorities and poor people from voting.  These are also the populations more likely to vote Democratic.

That also lies at the core of the US Attorneys scandal. US Attorneys who were unwilling to use their prosecutorial discretion to advance political ends were fired and replaced by those who were.

US Attorneys serve *at* the pleasure of the President – but not *for* the pleasure of the President. They are supposed to serve justice and the American people, and neither of those are advanced by pursing bogus voter fraud cases for political ends.

              1. does this or that cause that means that most of the members of the party do that including non elected voters.  So name names if you can.  Which republicans are committing these voter supression tactics?  If you don’t know which ones are doing it then I’d suggest you don’t really have a strong case that you they are doing it.

                1. William Rehnquist got his start in AZ carding voters. In 2000 Florida was a horrible mess — they had an (R) Sos and Guv. Ohio 2004 it was SoS Ken Blackwell (R). New Hampshire in 2002 it was RNC operatives. Now the USAttorneys were being pressured by the White House in 2006 to file against Dems.

I’ll agree it isn’t all Republicans, but it’s enough to see the pattern.

And look who’s defending Alberto Gonzales — Wayne Allard.

                  1. “William Rehnquist got his start in AZ carding voters.”  Election judges card voters.  Why is that soooo bad?  It sounds so sinister, but is it?

                2. Hell yes I can say which party and name names.

That’s *exactly” what the article says – starting with John Ashcroft. The Republican National Committee and its state organizations – especially in swing states – were the ones making the false charges.  Karl Rove was particularly interested in Wisconsin:

                  http://www.talkingpo

                    1. and Karl Rove runs the whole shebang.  That would encompass “most” – especially when bogus “voter fraud” cases were being pursued in the swing states that determine the election.

                      http://www.tpmmuckra

                    2. I know lots of repubs both elected and none elected who are good people and have never tried to surpress the vote, so if you have a grip with Rove say you have a grip with Rove.  It’s like saying all democrats are cheaters because Bill Clinton cheated.  Yes lots of politicans do it, but not all democrats do.
