Thanks, anarchists. As the Rocky Mountain News reports:
Rep. Diana DeGette has asked the House Appropriations Committee to set aside up to $50 million for security costs for the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver.
The request still must go through a lengthy approval process, and is being made in conjunction with an identical request for Minneapolis, host of the 2008 Republican National Convention…
For that kind of money, there’s better be armored blimps, James Bond himself, permanent security walls that just by coincidence ring the Grand Prix of Denver track, and the plushiest “free speech zones” ever, complete with an open bar and all the plate glass you can smash–in Limon.

The Secret Service designates some large, public events to be “National Security Special Events.” Others are the Olympics, the Super Bowl and other high profile events. When such a designation is made, a federal coordinating role is established and federal resources are made available.
This will actually be to the benefit of the people of Colorado. Why? Because the Secret Service does not reimburse municipalities for local police service.
If you’ve headed a local government and have had the “pleasure” of having the President or a Secret Service protectee visit, you’ll know what I’m talking about.
The Secret Service effectively federalizes the local police, as well as elements of the state police. Hundreds of hours of overtime are worked by these local departments. And at the end of the day, those (likely unbudgeted) expenses are NOT reimbursed. Some departments in major cities can take this hit. But for many smaller cities, it’s a budget buster.
DeGette should be lauded for taking care of her constituents.
The legitimacy of the extraordinary costs for putting on events like this, however, is an entirely different matter.
