Holtzman May Pick Spradley for Lt. Governor

After a disastrous week of press last week, Republican Marc Holtzman could use some positive news that his campaign can control…which might be why an announcement on his running mate could be on the way. From The Denver Post:

Republican gubernatorial candidate Marc Holtzman is considering picking the state’s first female speaker of the House, Lola Spradley, as his running mate. “We are considering her,” said Holtzman campaign manager Dick Leggitt. “We are still discussing our strategy, but we are making a number of decisions in the next week.”

Spradley said she could “not presume” that she would be asked to be Holtzman’s lieutenant governor, and therefore she would not say whether she would accept or not. “All of these things are part of discussions going on,” she said.

Spradley struck some political observers as an interesting pick because Holtzman has run on an anti-establishment platform, vowing to revolutionize GOP politics in the state. Spradley, who represented Beulah, was voted Republican House majority leader in 2000 and became speaker of the House three years later.

“She’s very much an establishment Republican, and Holtzman is having a revolution,” said GOP consultant Katy Atkinson. “He could be trying to balance the ticket.”…

…Leggitt said there were a few others on the short list for Holtzman’s running mate, but he declined to name any. Spradley and anyone else being considered, he said, have at least one thing in common.

“They are not part of the triumvirate,” he said, referring to GOP political powerhouses Gov. Bill Owens, businessman Bruce Benson and Holtzman’s GOP opponent, U.S. Rep. Bob Beauprez. Holtzman is expected to officially kick off his gubernatorial campaign March 1.

  1. Lola Spradley is a moderate pro-choice Republican who sponsored and voted for far more liberal TABOR “fixes” than Ref. C, which she then conveniently opposed.  Just wait until the BB folks look through her liberal and very “establishment” votes.  She is also very close to Mark Udall on Sierra Club issues–this will be VERY interesting.

  2. Beauprez should snap her up first.  She’d be a better balancer for him than for Holtzman…

Any sane person would bring balance to a Holtzman ticket.  Thus the only two who come to mind as not bringing balance to a Holtzman ticket would be Tancredo or Musgrave.

  3. Any sane person would bring something that is missing to a Holzman ticket, so two republicans who immediately come to mind as not qualified would be Tancredo and Musgrave.

As for Spradley, I cannot believe she is even entertaining the thought of running with this nutjob.

  4. Oh, so now Holtzman is going to “officially” kick off his campaign? I thought he did that back in July. I bet he can double how many people came out for his last extravaganza and get over 100 people there. Perhaps he can fly supporters in from Eastern Europe. What an absolute loser!

I believe I was present for an address Holtzman made early last year when he turned to both Mike Coffman and Bob Beauprez and stated that when the time came for one of them to advance the other two would step aside and support that person 100%.
Earth to Marc, the time has come buddy!!!!!!

  5. hilarious – I was at marc’s RV tour kickoff and there were over 200 people there in Colorado Springs and about 250 at the Denver kickoff.

I’m not sure whether I’m supporting him or not yet, but he definately has some fans.

And like it or not, BB isn’t exactly doing well either.  He’s about as exciting and energizing as richard simmons.  It’s like the blind following the blind.

  6. You will have to excuse me, when I said one hundered I could have meant two. I figured I would guestimate since that doesn’t even come close to the 1500 or so people who were out at the BB event last week. Apples to oranges if you know what I mean.
This time Holtzman will get four hundred? Slammin!

  7. Ben – To be honest, I’m not blown away by either one of them.  I think that’s the problem.

I don’t think that MH is energizing either, but I think it’s funny that everyone says BB is so much better, because he’s not.

I’ve met both men and I don’t think that either one of them is right for Colorado.  I think Campbell said it best, we’ve got our B team out there right now.

  8. I’m with you, Doh!  I’m a Republican but far from happy with either Beauprez or Holtzman.  Right now, it looks like the only “republican” in the race is Ritter.  I see the abortion fanatics are slicing up him now.  Not a good year for strong leadership, I guess.

  9. In today’s political climate, a candidate is either labeled a “far right kook”, a “far left whacko”, or just a generalized “nutjob”. Are these labels unfair or should the voters expect psych evals on all candidates?

I’ve met and listened to both Beauprez and Holtzman, and although I don’t agree with either on every issue, I find neither to be ready for the nut house. (Yet)

  11. Someone who calls Denver a “Rouge City” and files a false criminal complaint about his opponent stealing his fundraising list is a nut job.

  12. Holtzman campaign theme is from Man of La Mancha
“I can hear the cuckoo singing in the cuckooberry tree”
“If he says that that’s a helmut, I suggest that you agree.”
“But he’ll find it isn’t golden and won’t make him very brave.”
“Well, at least he’ll find it useful if he ever needs a shave.”

  13. Lola is a solid pick.  With her sweeping up the moderates and rural votes, and Marc concentrating on the Springs and Metro region with his economic message, the balance becomes obvious. Add in Lola’s interest in health care, marry that to Marc’s immigration plank, and you’ve got a solid team.

Aside from the Beauprez seminar posters, everyone in my circle has started to seriously consider the possibility of a Marc & Lola ticket, and are liking it more and more.

As to Beauprez, he’ll most likely keep his pick under wraps until the convention – keeping everyone waiting is one of his best habits.

  14. Live free or die, don’t you live in New Hampshire? Anyway, doesn’t matter. Lola Spradley made it clear to both candidates that this was the price for her endorsement. Guess Marc was the first to give in. He had to find some way to get support in the legislature since only one of them endorsed him…

  15. The Beauprez staffers are the ones starting to come across as nutjobs with their nonstop posting the last few days.

I guess you have to do something during flights onboard the Citation X…
