( – promoted by Colorado Pols)
I did a poll yesterday and clearly I missed a number of issues that many thought were major.
So here we go with a new poll that takes the top two items from the previous poll and adds the others that got a lot of action.
Remember, this is issues that the state or local government should address. Not federal or international. And not cultural issues that you don’t want legislated.
And this is the top issue you think the government should address. So if you think healthcare is the number 1 issue but you don’t want the state fixing it, don’t vote for it.

it is the fact that the budget is now a constitutional, rather than legislative, activity. Fixing water, K-12, health care and the rest can never come to a permanent solution until the ability to deal with the issues and balance the budget in a rational manner is available.
Health care. Not just a problem in Colorado of course, but a national crisis.
gay marriage.
It’s now banned in the state constitution. I would hope even the fundies would stop their yelping about it now.
Why isn’t that on there!?!
(just kiddin’) 🙂
Looks like education and healthcare top the list. And Unions/labor hit a big zero.
6 people actually voted that taxes are too low?
Geezuztapdancinchrist…..Too low?
You have to be kidding. Tell me that is a haha funny.
If they are in fact serious, maybe they can donate a much larger portion of their income, say 100%, to the infamous black hole in 2nd choice Ritter land, eh?
Bet they keep every plug nickle they possibly can though.
Socialist share the wealth crap.
Move to Venezuela, I hear their dictator, I mean president is a real huggy bear.
Here’s the problem: you’re a hard-ass. As the sublimely beautiful Black-eyed Peas put it, “Where is the love,” man? If Joe Voter isn’t paying for the lazy piece of sh*t eating bon-bons, smoking a bowl or two or three or, if the welfare office makes a boo-boo, four, and sleeping around with every “dawg” at the club, then something is wrong. A society that doesn’t take care of the dope-smoking prostitute is a loveless society. You know?
I want to raise taxes so high those rich SOBs–you know, the one’s who practically fund and run the world’s best economy–have to buy 1984 Cutlass Supremes like the rest of us. Right? I think it’s a sick society that doesn’t hand out hybrids to the drunks on the 16th street mall. I mean, don’t they deserve hybrids too?
Now that I think of it, don’t I deserve stuff. I’ve got two kids and a pregnant, stay-at-home wife, and I really could use a new Volvo V-70. It’s snowy and cold and I need a big car to tow six kids. Why the hell should I have to pay for it? In Sweden–this is no joke–they actually give every family a Volvo. Why shouldn’t Ritter give me one?
How about this for a campaign slogan: Raising Taxes for Colorado’s Family!
(Not the singular inferring ME).
Nice subtlely racist comments. Lets see: Mysoginist and a racist. Awesome.
Most of those who voted for education are basically voting to increase taxes. There are a lot of non-spending things that can be done for education but more money is a biggie.
You see, some of us Democrats believe in investment. And when the state invests in it’s citizens, it is a giant boon to the economy 10, 20, 30 years later. It may not help us individually, but it helps our children and other’s children.
Just think of us as long-term capitalists 🙂
Nice reframe David, but when I hear “invest”, I grab my wallet. What percentage of your income do you want to give to Uncle Sam to “invest”? How high is too high?
I have a suggestion. Most Christians believe in tithing 10% of their income to their church or charity. Dems and others who believe so strongly in the positive aspects of government can donate an extra 10% of their income to Uncle Sam. They will feel good that their earnings are going to something they believe in and the rest of the country won’t feel fleeced.
How’s that?
There are investments the government makes that make life better & more productive. But there are others that are a real waste of money.
The trick is maximizing the first and minimizing the second. But making no investments because some are bad – that is a receipe for disaster.
Maximizing the good and minimizing the bad? Is eliminating waste, decreasing the size and complexity of government, and reducing the size of government bureaucracies out of the question? There would be more money for “investment”, yes?
You just outlined the Cheney-Rumsfeld plan for the military, begun after Gulf I, when Cheney was Secretary of Defense. Started the RIF (Reduction In Force) of the army and set up the plan to privatize a lot more of what had been military functions. Cheney set out to cut from the military up to a million men. Does Hilburton ring a bell? Does Cheney going to work for Hilburton ring a bell? Does Rumsfeld..”we don’t need no stinkin’ troops” ring a bell? Now granted, Clinton continued the army downsizing…but he didn’t have “big picture” and he didn’t profit from it…..
Your plan in action. It is called Iraq. Look at those private contractors…wow…lucky us, we get to pay out for crap and watch our kids die in a Cheney-Rumsfeld Demostration Project…..
A leaner, more fiscally responsible government equals Iraq?
I feel so guilty. Forget my comments, long live bloat!:)
The rationale your proposed for reducing the size of government is exactly the rationale used by Cheney/Rumsfeld when they begun to make the military more “efficient” by reducing its size and modernizing, and most important, to our discussion here..by outsourcing or privatizing various government functions…..the war in Iraq was supposed to demonstrate how brilliant the plan was….a shock and awe minimilist military and huge contracts to the private sectors…
Don’t lose interest just because platitudes don’t solve the problem……you are gd right if a bit of bloat might have saved some kids’ lives over there in Iraq….
I didn’t vote for it, but I agree that taxes are too low. Don’t get me wrong; I don’t like paying taxes any more than anyone else. I do, though, like the things that taxes buy. Most of all, I enjoy living in a society where every child is entitled to a good quality education (which I did vote for). These kinds of values are at risk because of personal greed from people who want to pay less taxes, and damn the schools.
I tell people from out of state what I pay in taxes — especially property taxes — in Colorado Springs, and they are amazed. Unfortunately, it’s not really all that funny. That’s the money that should be paying for the elementary school down the street.
(Don’t misunderstand me; property taxes are morally evil. I’d do anything to replace them with an income or even a sales tax. Nevertheless, better to pay taxes for good purposes under an evil tax structure than to pay no taxes and let others suffer for it.)
Gay marriage is still the biggest threat to Colorado, the nation, the world and all the known universe, including the dark matter presumed to make up 90 percent of it. Nothing else in human history is as important as gay marriage. Nothing, I tell you. Nothing!!!!!!!!!!
Fix TABOR, and the other problems can be addressed. The 25% who said that fixing K-12 and college funding should be a priority need to realize that nothing — and I mean nothing — will be done on this issue without TABOR reform.
I say no money public money for consultants and no more money for official travel….
we ask someone outside the school districts to help or send anyone from Colorado to learn something new somewhere else.
Hiring consultants is not “asking someone to help.” It is paying a fortune for fees which we can’t afford. The travel train to “learn something new somewhere else” is too expensive. The school districts are loaded with Ph.ds….many earned on our dollar….most making more than the governor of the state.,,,,,we will just have to make do…with our inhouse, homegrown experts.
I’d like to see a cost benefit analysis of how money of consulltants and travel has resulted in improved achievement…..I don’t this is all working out for us, I just don’t.
…. without raising taxes.
There is spectacular wasting of precious funds, corrupt leadership, and incompetent administrators,
Which can all be eliminated to fund initiatives,
That will make it a college system to be proud of, again.
Gecko is going to have a heart attack :).
