Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bill Ritter issued an odd statement today that obviously has something to do with discussions about Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and the governor’s race:
Im in this race for the long haul regardless of who else may or may not get in, said Ritter, who named Colorado Childrens Campaign president Barbara OBrien as his lieutenant governor running mate two weeks ago. Were committed to leading Colorado to a better place and creating hope and opportunity for all Coloradans.
I hope Mayor Hickenlooper remains in office and finishes the job he started, Ritter added. Regardless of his final decision, I remain focused on talking with Coloradans from every corner of this state and reclaiming the governors office for Democrats.
What’s strange about this isn’t so much the statement itself, but the timing of it. Ritter could have issued this statement at any time in the last eight months, so why do it now? Perhaps Hickenlooper’s camp is trying to convince Ritter to step aside in advance of an announcement.

RITTER STATEMENT ON GOVERNORS RACE
Bill Ritter, the leading Democratic candidate for governor, today issued the following statement regarding ongoing speculation about the gubernatorial race:
Im in this race for the long haul regardless of who else may or may not get in, said Ritter, who named Colorado Childrens Campaign president Barbara OBrien as his lieutenant governor running mate two weeks ago. Were committed to leading Colorado to a better place and creating hope and opportunity for all Coloradans.
I hope Mayor Hickenlooper remains in office and finishes the job he started, Ritter added. Regardless of his final decision, I remain focused on talking with Coloradans from every corner of this state and reclaiming the governors office for Democrats.
Ritter, 49, was appointed by then-Gov. Roy Romer as Denver district attorney in 1993. Ritter was elected three times after that and served until January 2005. He recently left his job with the law firm of Hogan & Hartson to campaign full time.
OBrien also is resigning her job at the Childrens Campaign to join the Ritter ticket.

If Hick gets in the race, will the Hick vs Ritter posts be as nasty as the Beauprez vs Holtzman posts?
If Hick gets in the race, will the Hick vs Ritter posts be as nasty as the Beauprez vs Holtzman posts?
Bill Ritter is acting like Mike Miles.
After today’s brutal slamming of fili-blustering in the Senate, Alito is a shoe-in. Women’s rights are now on the table, and I am scared that no matter what anyone says, one of 12 siblings isn’t gonna help matters. I’m scared.
Can’t hardly blame the guy for blasting such a weird press release. That poll last week showed that Ritter’s only chance of winning is to have Beauprez beat Holtzman…
He’s going to spend so much time defending himself to his own party that he will totally alienate the U’s and Moderate R’s who would vote for him come the general.
I can’t blame Ritter either.
As I see it, the Colorado Democrats are obviously sending out the feelers (or are the ORDERS) to Ritter & Co. – “If Hick gets in, you run for AG”.
And why should Ritter do that?
If you ask me, Hick is acting like Hillary Clinton. (Just ask Nita Lowey).
I guess what this comes down to is:
“Hick will get in only if Ritter steps aside.”
“Alice Madden, Pat Waak calling for you, line 1.”
Becky, to answer your question…
Oh yeah… Don’t forget that little love fest the Democrats had on this site after Waak was elected.
Hicks gets in and we’ll be hearing about how short Ritter is.
WHEN Hickenlooper announces, Ritter will become yesterday’s news. there has been much talk in the party that Ritter should run for AG instead, and I cannot imagine that the party officials have not mentioned this to Ritter.
As for the timing…perhaps he thinks we will hear from the Mayor (finally!) this week.
The fact that Ritter does have to keep explaining himself to his own party should tell him everything he needs to know about his candidacy.
Bill Ritter is acting like Mike Miles.
Dan, come on, it’s just dumb to keep pushing that Ritter for AG line. What part about him running for governor can’t you understand?
Ritter should absolutely run for AG when Hick get in the Gov’s race. Dems could actually sweep the top offices…
You know Dan, you’re a good guy for being a DEM and all, but COME ON!
At this stage of the game I could care less what Hick wants to do, but he is not acting like a guy who is tagging us (as in the GOP) along. He sounds like a guy who just can’t figure out how to tell his adorning public(yourself Dan)that the answer is NO.
Good for Ritter. He is showing an unwavering ability to stand his ground and has hard work, solid fundraising and good character on his side. So what if Pat Waak and the rest of Be The Change is not doing whatever usless thing they do to support a candidate – Ritter is better off without the lame support system that Waak has truned the Dem Party HQ into since her term started a year ago.
She hates Ken Salazar – one of the best things we’ve got representing us in DC. Her judgement is obviously a little off and her efforts misdirected.
Hick lost my vote a while ago. Every day I see Ritter showing us what he’s made of and I like what I see.
