Gov. Bill Owens told 9News that he isn’t looking at a run for the U.S. Senate, though he didn’t exactly rule it out entirely:
Gov. Bill Owens (R-Colorado) says a run for the U.S. Senate is “not something that I’m looking at” and that he hopes incumbent Republican Wayne Allard runs for re-election…
…Allard is due to reveal his plans early next year and Owens’ name has been bandied about as a possible candidate should Allard decide to step down. The term-limited governor, who is set to leave office on January 9, says the attention is flattering, but unrealistic.
“It’s not something that I’m looking at,” said Owens. “I’ve really enjoyed every day that I’ve been governor, but I also am really looking forward to what comes next. In my case, I’m going to be doing some international business, going to be putting some kids through college.”
By most accounts Owens is solely focused on making money after his term as governor ends, and he certainly wouldn’t be at the top of the list for Republicans if he did want to run for the Senate. But if things play out right and the GOP is still looking for a strong candidate in early 2008…

… when Owens came into office we were all worrying that he’d be an ultra-reactionary in many ways, on “values” issues as well as fiscal matters. We were pleasantly surprised. He wasn’t the ogre we feared.
I did not agree with many of Owens’ stances, especially on the environment and transportation, but he did the right thing on Ref. C (I’ll forgive him his Maine idiocy) and he didn’t act like a demagogue on most social issues.
The fact that Bill Ritter has said that he would have vetoed many of the same bills that Owens did says a lot not only about Ritter but about Owens.
Assuming as I do that there is nothing to all those scurrilous (and anonymous, natch) rumors that have popped up here and there over the last few years, I think Owens would be a formidable candidate for Senate in 2008.
There are a lot of things he did while in office that still bother me. Anyone remember the state is burning comment that he made? Or how about his veto of legislation that would have required hospitals to provide the morning after pill to rape victims? That still sticks out to me as a sign of pandering to the base rather than the good of the community.
In a crowded primary, he may have some advantage having won a state-wide race three time (?), but he has a long history for his competitors to draw from and that would hurt him in the long run.
The wing nuts are gonna have a fit after reading your post. They will point to it as Exhibit “A” when they put Bill Owens on trial for being: (a) a RINO, (b) a collaborator in the construction of the welfare state, (c) a traitor to “the Cause” (if he ever actually belonged to it), or (d) all of the above.
That said, I’d like to second your laudatory comments about him. In ’98, I was convinced he was the Second Coming of Charlie Duke. I was pleasantly surprised by how he turned out.
to do his “international business”? I’ve heard some odd rumors, but gentlemen never tell. . .
is one place I have heard.
Owens was an ogre. The only redeeming part of his two terms were the last two years when Dems who controlled both houses forced him to actually do something positive, especially with Ref. C & D.
I disagreed with him a lot. But I think he did well for the state and while I can always find 1 or 2 issues I’m real upset about, I found most of what he did to be reasonable. Maybe not what I would have picked, but reasonable.
That said, I don’t think he was a great governor. C & D was after we had gotten into terrible straights and was a no brainer. On education he pushed for CSAP but we haven’t seen it improve much.
I would put him down as a positive influence overall and he did ok. But he did not bring significant improvement to the state. We still have most of the same problems we had when he first took office.
For many he is great because unlike G.W. Bush, he didn’t make things a lot worse. But great would be if he made things a lot better.

He wasn’t a bad governor because he didn’t do much damage. But he wasn’t exactly a leader, except in C & D, either.
Could do a lot worse, could do a lot better.
Owens is a great governor, and he’d have my support for US Senate from Day One.
Why, in your opinion, has Owens been a great Governor, rep?
In the spirit of the Colbert Report.
Repsjohnso, was Owens a great governor or the greatest?
