Gallaghers County Clerk proposal must not go forward

  • by: Dan Willis

I have just received the text of the proposal that Dennis Gallagher is pushing to change from an Election Commission to an elected County Clerk.

There is an absolutely unacceptable provision in this proposal. It provides that the person who gets the most votes for Election Commissioner in May will be elected County Clerk if the measure also passes on the same ballot.

That is ludacrious! How can anyone be expected to run for an office when they don’t know for sure which office they are running for? Not to mention there is no provision for run-off in the first election. That means the first County Clerk will be elected with something like 25% of the vote since the top vote getter for Election Commission is usually in that ball park.

I would also point out the offices are definitely not the same thing. A County Clerk has several duties, one of the “lesser” of which (as far as time committment goes) is elections. An Election Commissioner is elected to do nothing BUT run the elections.

People run for Election Commission because they care about elections. People run for County Clerk because they are eying higher office.

I strongly encourage everyone to e-mail Gallagher and let him know what a supremely bad idea this is. His address is dennis.gallagher@ci.denver.co.us

Thank you (rant over)

  1. ……..It smells like it might pass constitutional muster….. Leave it to the Pompous Old Windbag to take an idea which might have some merit (changing the DEC to an elected City Clerk’s position) and twist it in such a way as to kill it!
