  1. http://news.yahoo.co

A homeowner’s association is fining a resident for displaying a wreath that’s in the form of a peace sign. The homeowner’s association president fired the entire board when they said the wreath didn’t violate the covenant’s “no signs” clause, so you know it’s personal.

Just one more reason that I live in a no-covenant neighborhood.

    1. Working in Morgan Carroll’s office in the last session, I saw a lot of fact gathering and witness lists being made.  As this wasn’t a principle concern of mine, I think it accurate to say that nothing came of it in 2006.  But most of that information is ready for 2007.

The horror stories I’ve heard (some in accumulating the above) over the years are, well, horrible.  I tend to think that the problem is that good and reasonable homeowners don’t get involved, and that leave a vacuum.  What fills the vacuum?  Little Nazi wanna be control freaks.

I didn’t know a president could fire a board.  That sounds suspicious.  Of course, that’s all in the bylaws of the given covenanted community, all public record.

I’d rather live in a tent than in one of these mini-gulags.

      1. I remember him talking about it on the Monthly radio call and answer with Mike Rosen and he said they did more good than harm. Do you know if there was a deleberate decision to wait for him to be out of office before attempting any legislation?

    2. are the epitome of “tin pot tyrants”.  I can still remember turning into one of those “throw a pot of spaghetti against the wall street layout” neighborhoods and a lady ran out into the street screaming about how they don’t allow big trucks onto their streets!  She shouted at me that she would have me fined for bringing my wrecker into the neighborhood.  When I got to the customers house to pick up his truck, I told him about it.  He just laughed and told me that she was the HOA crank.  She had been the president of the Association but then proceeded to literally fine everyone in the neighborhood to show her power.  They immediately threw her out and now all she could do was yell at people.  I am so glad I live in an older neighborhood that doesn’t have this kind of idiocy.

      1. Histrionic people cannot differentiate between USING a street and PARKING on a street.  Most covenenanted neighborhoods have restrictions like that so Billy Bob, honest hard worker almost never at home trucker, can’t park his big rig in front of home sweet HOA home.

Even restricted roads have a “Local Deliveries Excepted” or similar statement on signs.

Most of those neighborhoods, while clean and smooth with their covenants against open garage doors, look like Stepford Wives, all similar and boring in their HOA approved color schemes.

I guess some people love ’em.  This Dem’s Libertarian streak showing; live and let live if it isn’t really egregious.

        1. I am always amazed that the most virulent anti-government (get government off my back) types are often the first to willingly give up the most basic property rights.

I remember the case of a guy who got dinged by his HOA for flying the American Flag on his property.  He actually had to go to the expense of fiing suit in federal court to get his right protected.

I to am a libertarian Democrat and I think I am more libertarian than the average Republican these days.

    3. They prevent a lot of abuse and nuisances when they’re run right. But like every other form of government, they can be abused by cranks and cheats.

My own HOA is a bunch of hardworking people helping to keep my neighborhood a better place. It’s a shame when idiots like this peace wreath critic (a “sign of Satan”?) give all HOAs a bad name. The woman who put up the wreath used to be president of the same HOA and she seems to have kept her head on straight.

        1. … maybe Jesus is no longer the “Prince of Peace,” but rather the “Prince of Stay the Course.”

(For those who care, that other blog is thestranger.com/blog.)

  2. China and India to surpass West

    http://news.yahoo.co

“Western nations must prepare for a future dominated by China and India, whose rapid economic rise will soon fundamentally alter the balance of power, former World Bank chief James Wolfensohn has warned.

“Wealthy countries were failing to understand the impact of the invevitable growth of the two Asian powerhouses, Wolfensohn said in the 2006 Wallace Wurth Memorial Lecture at the University of New South Wales at the weekend…

“{It’s} clear that Western nations and Australia were not investing enough in educating the next generation to be able to take advantage of the coming realignment, he said.”

Gecko, this is in answer to your question as to why your taxes should help pay for college for other kids. Our nation as a whole is stronger when more people are college educated.

    1. are like the chauvenistic Brits a hundred years ago who just wouldn’t accept that the empire was crumbling.

Paul Revere seems to be the only man ever given credit for warning of impending change.

The Righties look back and say, “Yup, we are the greatest country on earth.”  Lefties look forward, see China, India, and the EU and say, “Shit, we got some problems here.  Let’s solve them!”

  3. I enjoy both blogs on a regular basis and was curious if Pols has a response to what ToTheRight is saying.
One thing to note is that Pols gets accused of being both liberal and conservative on a somewhat regular basis.  I would say the majority of bloggers on this site are liberal but the blog itself is neutral.
