Perhaps Republican Marc Holtzman wouldn’t have beaten Democrat Bill Ritter for governor, but would he have been a better candidate for the GOP than Bob Beauprez proved to be? He certainly would have had a hard time being as big of a drain on the party as a whole.

Would he have won? Who knows? Would he have dragged down the entire party? No.
Holtzman would never have had problems with money as he could self-fund (remember when the Beauprez crew tried to say that was a negative?). Holtzman had no record that could be ripped asunder (remember when the Beauprez crew tried to say that was a negative?). Say what you will about his positions, it’s hard to accuse him of being a flip-flopper.
Not to mention the fact that Holtzman distanced himself from the party right out of the starting gate while Beauprez for some reason decided the public wanted a real Republican insider-candidate in 2006.
At least there wouldn’t have been negative coat-tails and the downballot candidates could have stood on their own merits instead of getting dragged down along with Both Ways Bob.
He wasn’t honest about his relationship with Reagan. He was trying to go harder radical than BWB, and he rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.
His staff made some critical errors during the primary, and probablly would have made more during the general.
I’m doubtful he would have done any better than BWB.
Coffman would have been a much better candidate, but he couldn’t get through the money raising part of the primaries.
coffman has no loyalty to others and especially his own staff. what did he go through this series, seven different campaign managers? I’m an activist that will never work for him again.
Man you need to change your handle now eh?
People will think you are for Rolling the Idiot Democrats……….
I have to admit I did pretty well this cycle. the folks I worked for won and the rinos and squishes lost. but no, I’ll stick with the idiots name…
So, in my opinion, Holtzman stood for the wrong ideas; but he stood for something. Beauprez never stood for anything except being a jerk on the statewide media stage. For that reason, I think it’s clear that Holtzman would have done better, and that Colorado would have seen a better race from Ritter, as well, had Holtzman run. (Not that Ritter ran a poor race; but he did get pushed into repeating vague platitudes rather often.)
Would it have even been possible for Holtzman to lose by more than 15% to Ritter? I doubt it.
At least it would have just sat there and photosynthesized instead of throwing itself on the floor every five minutes and scattering dirt and *ahem* fertilizer all over.
Does anybody even remember the primary ? Holtzman had all these goofy statements like John Elway was going to ride on his tour bus, Nancy Reagan was going to endorse him, his campaign was a “revolution”, etc. etc. Not to mention the padding of his resume – Owens basically admitted Holtzman didn’t really do anything when he was Secy. of Technology.
Cropping photos ? Accusing his opponent of stealing his fundraising list ? Campaigning with the Polish President? Calling Denver a Rogue City ? Calling recpients of Ref. C Pigs ?
I know everyone thinks it couldn’t have been worse with BB, but it could have.
Ah Marc, you made us smile… Holtzman would have been like Goldwater ’64: everyone KNEW he was gonna lose. With Beauprez, part of the disappointment was that Republicans really expected him to win.
remember that MH was farther to the right than BWB in a year that didn’t help very much. Also, MH had more negatives than people seem to be remembering. The spread the Post did on him was the tip of the iceberg. That said, could he possibly have run a less coherent campaign than BWB…
Little bastard….
OK, that’s funny !
Holtzman is short. Beauprez’s whole campaign was based on the fact that he was tall. It got him through the primary anyway. In the general election, he changed tactics and stood next to a horse’s ass and invited voters to figure out which one was Beauprez. Most voters just thought they were seeing double. At least when he was running, Holtzman stood next to a pig, which was more his equal in the height department. I was pretty sure in those ads that the pig’s ass was the one on the right and Holtzman on the left. Or was it the other way around?
I get so confused following Colorado politics.
Help me out here, Lauren Bacall.
Mike Miles, who I worked very hard for and still wear a MM hat from time to time, definitely suffered from visual image. He is short, not very good looking. Salazar has the legitimate western suit and cowboy hat, looks are reasonable.
But close your eyes, listen to the words, and it’s hands down Mike.
Unfortunately, it’s a TV world.
Between Ritter growing up on a farm, Holtzman w/ his pig, B.W.B. standing next to the horse’s ass, and Janet Rowland w/ her sheep, ’06 was officially the “Barnyard Election”!
I don’t remember the pig. Soon I will forget the horse’s rear. It’s best to forget bad memories quickly and look forward:)
in the 2003 Mayoral election swears he is grateful to the Beauprez campaign — for removing from Z’s team the title of “worst campaign ever.”
…but yes, Holtzman would have been the better candidate to go against Ritter; a credible ‘outsider’ who could self fund while articulating a tangible plan and agenda.
The establishment R’s screwed up, again.
