The First Sore Loserman 2006 Award Nominee Is...

  • by: Colorado Pols

…ousted state senator Lew Entz, according to today’s Pueblo Chieftain:

After all was said and done, Democrat Gail Schwartz surged ahead Wednesday to unseat incumbent GOP Sen. Lewis Entz in Senate District 5…

Schwartz won 81 percent of the vote in Pitkin County and 63 percent in Gunnison County.

While Entz won about 60 percent of the vote in Alamosa, Rio Grande, Mineral, Hindsdale and Delta counties, it wasn’t enough to top the Democratic votes in those more populated counties.

A clearly disappointed Entz said his troubles stemmed from U.S. Sen. Ken Salazar’s endorsement of Schwartz. Though Salazar and Schwartz are fellow party members, the senator and Entz are long-time friends who have routinely supported each other in previous races.

“Pitkin County went after me. The (San Luis) Valley and Ken Salazar went after me, too,” the Hooper potato farmer said. “I’d of won this deal if it hadn’t been for Ken Salazar. It’s just a case that he went south on me after promising that he’d stay neutral, then he told me she raised a lot of money for his campaign last time and is going to raise money for the next one. Money verses friendship, I guess.”

Schwartz, however, said Entz has only himself to blame for the outcome…

We’ll be keeping a close eye out for Loserman Award candidates as they emerge–be sure to let us know when you spot them.

      1. Maybe Entz should not have campaigned for Pete Coors in 2004.  And maybe he should not have campaigned for a Republican in the CD3 race against John Salazar.

Entz has only himself to blame.

“Kettle.  Hello, this is the pot.”

    1. … until the next time he gets invited to a lobbyist-sponsored event and hits a hole in one.

Oh wait a minute: that won’t happen because (1) Berens is history and (2) Amendment 41 will put an end to those shenanigans.

  1. I know he made some poor decisions on water and other issues that affected the the valley, and his campaign consisted of, “Vote for me, Schwartz is from Pitkin county”, but Entz has served Colorado in municipal to state offices for something like 100 years.

He gets high marks in my book, nothing but respect for a public servant of his stature.

    1. Lew Entz is a good guy and a real gentleman.  However, this is sour grapes on his part and he ought to keep it to himself.  He’s had a long career as a public servant, and he should go out with dignity, not by blaming people from outside his party for not endorsing him.

      1. Deeds speak louder than words, and what a decent person does at this point is congratulate his or her opoonent, then make a plea for consideration of the losing candidate’s positions.  As in,

“I’d like to congratulate my opponent on her victory in a tough race.  As she represents us, I hope she will keep the needs of Colorado’s farmers first in her mind.  I wish her the best of luck and hope she serves all Coloradans well.”

Because the “waaaah, I shouldn’t have lost thing” looks kind of ridiculous.

        1. Farmer
          Served US Marine Corps
          Alamosa County Commissioner – 1968 to ’82
          State Rep – 1983 to ’98
          State Senator – 2001 – ’06

Served his State and country well.  I think he can be a little petulent at the end of his career.

          You’ll be missed Lew.

          1. He’s a good man. I’m sure it is very difficult for him to lose the race and he’s speaking in a moment of frustration. Yes, it doesn’t look dignified but I’ll forgive him because he gave the state a lot of years.

          2. I think Lew underestimated the anti R backlash coming and didn’t work as hard to raise money early on.  He had always enjoyed bipartisan support based on his moderate voting record and thought he’d be rewarded with loyalty based on this and his many his years of service.  He was wrong.

  2. “Money verses friendship, I guess.”  Awwww gee Lew… I need a hanky.

If anyone “went south” it was Entz when he endorsed Pete Coors over Ken Salazar in 2004.  After that numbskull move, why on earth did he expect Ken’s endorsement this time?

Nice try…  Colorado Media Matters did an item on this back on October 6: Chieftain omitted Entz’s reported endorsement of Coors while reporting Entz unhappy about not getting Salazar endorsement

  3. He placed his faith and political future in the hands of Trailhead, and as such, got what he had coming to him.  Any word on how Bill Berens is dealing with his loss?  Maybe working on his slice…..

    1. how many people show up on ColoradoPols and post shallow spin, with the apparent expectation that it will fool people.  Perhaps in some other context besides a thread on a political blog where we just finished noting Entz’ endorsement of Pete Coors, that “stabbed an old friend for money” line would play; obviously Lew Entz thinks it will, or he wouldn’t have said it.  But here, of all places, it really just sounds somewhere between “naive” and “obstinately ignorant”.
