SOS Press Release: Things Are Running Smoothly

“The Colorado Secretary of State’s office reports the statewide election process running smoothly.”

Wow. With a straight face, even. Here’s the press release just sent out from the Colorado Secretary of State:

The Colorado Secretary of State’s office reports the statewide election process running smoothly.

When polls opened at 7:00 a.m. there was a great deal of interest from voters. Long lines were reported in scattered areas this morning, but were attributed to heightened interest in some races and a lengthy ballot.

Denver election officials have also reported problems with their electronic poll book.  The Secretary of State election staff is in communication with Denver County on the issue.

A lawsuit has been filed by the Colorado Democratic Party in Denver District Court to keep the polls open an additional two hours in Denver County.  At this time no decision has been rendered by the court allowing this for Denver voters.  The Secretary of State strongly urges voters to be at the polls by 7:00 p.m.  State law provides that any voter in line by 7 p.m. may cast a ballot on Election Day.

“Please do not depend on polls being kept open late,” Gigi Dennis cautioned Denver voters.  “If you are at the polls by 7 p.m. you will cast a ballot. All voters in line will be able to vote.”

Voters should be prepared for the after-work surge at the polls.  Voters are reminded to bring picture ID or other acceptable forms of identification.

“It is great to see so much interest on Election Day,” Dennis added.  “Based on previous election-day turnout, I anticipate 1,000,000 voters will cast a ballot today.  Currently our records show a little over 410,000 voters have already voted absentee or in early voting.”

The Secretary of State’s office will be working throughout the evening to provide advice and support to the County Clerks.  Additional updates will be sent out as new information becomes available.

  1. She won’t be our Secretary of State for much longer.  No matter who wins, they aren’t likely to be worse than Gigi.  I don’t think Mike Coffman has quite the same grasp on election issues as Ken Gordon has, and I’m a bit worried about partisanship from Coffman, but either has to be an improvement on the travesty that has been Gigi Dennis’s term in office.

    1. actually.  Dennis had proven to be a capable, fairly independent legislator…and then she literally crashed and burned as an executive officer for the state.

An absolute disasterous end to what had been a fine career in public service.

    2. Although I preferred and voted for Ken Gordon, even Mike Coffman will be a big improvement over what we have now.  Any thoughts on who was worse, Gi-Gi or Vicki Buckley?

      1. hands down.  Vikki Buckley was a right winger (who can forget her speech to the NRA just a week or two after the  Columbine massacre), but she really didn’t do that much to impact elections one way or the other–in short, she did her job.  Gigi has actively inserted herself time and time again on the side of the Republicans.

        1. We seem to have different recollections as far as Vikki Buckley is concerned.

Buckley originally kept Colorado?s medical marijuana initiative from being counted as a valid ballot question in 1998, claiming there weren?t enough signatures turned in:

          (Archived Rocky Mountain News article):
          http://www.levellers

Shortly afterward, it surfaced that she wasn?t exactly above board in how the ballot initiative was evaluated:

          (Archived Colorado Springs Gazette article):
          http://www.hemp.net/

After she died, ballot initiatives that hadn?t been counted were mysteriously found in her office. Colorado?s medical marijuana initiative was placed by court order on the ballot in 2000. It passed by a landslide. Today the state of Colorado officially recognizes medical marijuana ? no thanks to the shenanigans of Vikki Buckley.

  2. It is not the job of the SOS’s office to run the election in Denver or anywhere else.  Her job is to collect, certify, and report election results.  I have seen no reports of deficiencies in that area.

Karl Rove is not stealing the election in Denver; administrative incompetence by elected officials in Denver municipal government is the cause of this problem.

    1. We have the Republican AG and Secretary of State colluding to ensure that today’s chaos in Denver means fewer people get to vote.  This is Gigi Dennis’ job.

I hope you didn’t make the mistake of voting for Coffman.  We need to change this.

        1. in court today.  She’s saying “everything’s fine,” and he’s refusing to leave Denver’s overcrowded vote centers open any longer to allow citizens to exercise their voting rights.  In point of fact, this is part of her job, so your original comment was wrong.

Regardless of the cause, these Republicans are standing in the way of votes being counted.  Why does that make you so happy?

          1. is to enforce compliance with the agreed upon process for conducting an election.

I believe in the rule of law. It was developed to prevent the stealing of elections, and was passed upon, after complete review, by a majority of the [Democratically control] legislature.

          2. get off your butts, get in your cars, and start shuttling people from the long wait areas to the short wait areas.  It’s called ‘get out the vote’.  It’s part of being personally responsible for the outcomes you want.

            “Dear Friend,

This year, Denver has changed from precinct-based polling locations to “Vote Centers”.

Denver residents no longer vote at their old precinct locations on Election Day. Instead, you can choose any one of 55 Vote Centers around the city.”

Don’t blame the GOP and Gigi Dennis for your failures.

    2. It *is* the job of the SOS to work with the various election offices throughout the state to ensure a fair, accurate, and efficient vote.  However, it is the primary responsibility of the various election offices to actually do the buying, planning, organizing.

More importantly, though, it is *not* the Secretary of State’s job to try to impede the fair representation of the people by opposing injunctions to extend voting hours in areas where difficulties have arisen.  That she and John Suthers are actively opposing an action that has no negative consequences for voting is not a Good Thing.
