BREAKING: Matt Gaetz Pulls Out Of AG Nomination

  • by: Colorado Pols

UPDATE: The plot thickens as CNN alleges Matt Gaetz’s pullout came just ahead of new revelations of even more sexual misconduct:

As Tweeted by former Rep. Matt “Giggity” Gaetz moments ago, the congressman best known for being investigated by the Justice Department for sex trafficking will not be the nation’s top law enforcement officer after all:

After abruptly resigning his seat in Congress to dodge the release of the Ethics Committee’s report into his conduct, Matt Gaetz is suddenly out of a job–at least for now, since it’s entirely possible Gaetz will get a job somewhere in the Trump administration that doesn’t require the Senate confirmation Gaetz appears to have been informed was hopelessly out of reach. We’ll update with reactions to this significant early loss for Trump from Gaetz’s close friend Rep. Lauren Boebert and others as they come in.

    1. Pam Bondi (next in the Senate barrel for U.S. A.G.) can go with them. She was the A.G. in FL during the marriage equality battles. She was also one of Yammie-pie’s lawyers in the first impeachment. She was the A.G. that led the state appeals trying to scuttle the A.C.A, and her résumé just gets worse from there: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pam_Bondi

      1. She is more qualified than Gaetz, but is a partisan hack.  She'll get confirmed and DOJ will rot from the top.  I've had communications with line AUSAs who are considering leaving, given who some USAs are likely to be.  On the plus side, incompetence makes drug, labor, and sex trafficking easier to get away with.  Yay, USA.  Slow claps all around.

    1. If it wasn't so obscene, these puns and sexual innuendo would be funny. As it is, the guy is a pervert preying on young women. At least he won't be our top law enforcement official.

  1. Aw, man!  Gaetz was going to eliminate almost all crime(s)!  The only thing left to prosecute was being a member of the Democratic Party!  As for any other former illegal acts, he was going to take his lead from Trump and “Go Wild!”

    1. Upon further review I’m not understanding why this is suddenly a problem for Republicans and Tram Trump/Project 2025/MAGAniancs?   I mean, hell, this isn’t really “news,” they all knew including T-hump; and, anyway, isn’t this red-meat-red-blooded-alpha-manliness stuff exactly why the Dementiaed Mango selected Gaetz in the first place?

  2. You can’t fix (Trump) stupid.  True, Matt Gaetz’s appointment is delayed, but it’s still an eventuality down the road in this misadministration, and Gaetz’s proclivities will someday give new meaning to the term “playground recess appointment.”

Next criminal at bat — Ken Paxton.

Thump’s America: The home of the free (felons).

  3. Get him on a tax charge!

I want to know if he had an under-the-table (NO pun intended) nanny for whom he failed to pay taxes. How many Democratic appointments were cancelled due to stupid peccadillos (again, NO pun intended).

For that matter, did Gaetz pay taxes for the sexual favors he was purchasing?

  4. I would've loved to have seen Kevin McCarthy's face when he read Matt Gaetz saying, "There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle…"

  5. Lest we soon forget, in all our delight, just how much of a steaming turd filling in a platter of footlong turd sandwiches is House Speaker Mike Johnson and the Republican House “Ethics” Committee???

They had the report(s) and they all knew the crimes.

(And, isn’t it interesting how that gang of christian Johnsons can work themselves into such a feverish lather over where a woman representative is and isn’t allowed to privately relieve herself, but couldn’t care any less about where a potential United States Attorney General has been publicly shitting his bed?)

  6. Republican Messaging at work.

There were also the Proud Boy connections. One advantage of outrageous sex scandals is that the titillation serves as an effective distraction

  7. And the replacement — former Florida AG Pam Bondi …

Let us begin a consideration of HER qualifications & commitment to justice versus her relationship to Trump & willingness to pursue "enemies."

  8. He resigned from the current Congress but was reelected to the upcoming Congress.  Will he serve in that Congress and if so, will the Ethics investigation follow on?

    1. Interesting questions … I don't think I saw the nuances of his resignation,

      Fact Check said

DeSantis instructed Florida Secretary of State Cord Byrd to schedule special elections to determine successors for both Gaetz and Rep. Michael Waltz, USA TODAY Network-Florida reported. Trump selected Waltz to serve as his national security advisor.

I doubt Gaetz would be a candidate for the special election – that would almost certainly resuscitate the Ethics process.

      1. If PAB doesn't find Gaetz no-Senate-confirmation-required position in the next administration, DeSantis can always send him to the Senate after Rubio gets confirmed as Secretary of State.
