      The smear campaign against Tim Walz is stale and cynical. But left alone, it can do damage.

      Chris LaCivita, a longtime GOP strategist, is one of the two co-managers of the Donald Trump campaign, which is struggling to slow Harris’s momentum. Two decades ago, LaCivita helped write and produce television ads for Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, a group that falsely claimed Kerry was misrepresenting his service as a Swift boat captain in the Vietnam War — for which Kerry was awarded three Purple Hearts, a Silver Star and a Bronze Star.

      Surely the Harris-Walz team has enough staff, money and brainpower to do two things at once. They should push full speed ahead with a campaign whose huge crowds and joyful enthusiasm have reshaped the presidential contest practically overnight. And they should push back — hard — against the Republicans’ attempt to do to Walz what they did to Kerry.

      That pushback begins by ensuring that the facts are trumpeted as loudly as the lies.
