Appearing on CNN this morning with host Dana Bash, Colorado’s Gov. Jared Polis, who in all fairness has been listed as a potential candidate for vice president under the new Democratic favorite for the presidential nomination Kamala Harris, busted up the newsroom with this hilarious answer to the question of whether he would take the job if asked:
BASH: If she asked you to be her running mate, would you accept?
POLIS: Well Dana, we’re not even there, I appreciate the question. I love the job I’m doing, you know I love Colorado. It’s great. Obviously if somebody asked I’d take a serious look at it, but my phone hasn’t rung yet. Look, if they do the polling and it turns out that they need a 49-year-old balding gay Jew from Boulder Colorado, they got my number. [Pols emphasis]
BASH: Um, that was very funny.
Gov. Polis has always had a knack for self-deprecating humor, and it’s a joke that reveals more self-awareness on Polis’ part in these prediction-defying times than the average blindly ambitious politico.
Polis might still wind up being part of a Harris administration, of course, but Colorado would be happy to keep him for two more years.

Not everybody loves Jared Polis.
Yup. Between pulling the rug out from under his O&G petition to his veto of several progressive measures, quite a few people have reason not to <3 Polis.
I agree with all your comments on this post. It seems to be a perennial issue that Democrats end up believing someone is for them based on their rhetoric and identity presentation, and ignore the money and power driving the political machine. This is about to happen again with Kamala Harris. I'll vote blue no matter who, but let's not be naive about the motivations of these politicians, especially at the highest levels.
If you look to the UK you can see a lot of Labour voters realizing that their problems are just as entrenched as ours. The wave of Labour MPs are summarily ignoring every promise they made on the campaign trail.
Politicians should be our adversaries, and we should be voting for the adversary we have the greatest chance of beating up. Unfortunately it seems as if revolutions or collapse are the only paths to meaningful reforms in our globalist neoliberal hell world. May they be as peaceful as possible.
If he is so unpopular, why didn't he have a primary challenger in 2022?
Because he's rich AF? Because all of the big-money donors supported him? Because he was the incumbent? Elected office is not just a popularity contest; it is also an exercise in applied power and influence.
Maybe you should have run against Polis.
I'm flattered, but I'm none of those things. Most importantly, I'm not stupid, and therefore I'm aware that I have no significant power or influence or (yes) popularity that could be wielded in pursuit of a statewide office.
C'mon, CHB. Did Gorky say something that is incorrect? Your response is pretty lame. You know how politics works and you are pretty opinionated..sooo… for which political offices have you competed? Do you only get to comment if you are a candidate?
He didn’t say much of anything except complain about Polis. And you saying my comment is “lame” is taken as a high compliment.
Those big money donors referenced by Gorky made it possible for Colorado to become a blue state.
Jared Polis isn’t a Democrat, he’s a “social libertarian”.
In the late eveing, he believes he cares about doing the right thing.
Then he goes to bed.
The next morning, he wakes with the satisfying realization he’s worth $300m.
He puts on his rich guy liberterianwear and goes to work.. vetoes a few bills, lets red county commissioners defy science, and joins Koch and Walton in support of charter schools for public education.
Your description of Polis as "social libertarian" is good and applies to so many of our elected representatives. It is descriptive of so many Democrats who float to the top of "party leadership". Senators Bennet and Hickenlooper certainly represent that group. They think like rich guys.
They dwell in a privileged world where my reality is an academic abstraction to them, because they ARE rich. All their answers are based on a lifestyle not shared by millions of citizens who are not funded by politics or personal wealth.
No one gets to be governor or senator unless, in Colorado, the OilyBoyz say so. Polis raised his hackles and mouthed off to the OilyBoyz when they got too close to his house…so they left. His support for O&G reform immediately softened dramatically…or have we forgotten?
Of course, no one is ever truly universally loved in politics, that's only occurs in the myth building that occurs after a figure is dead.
As the interview shows, Polis is savvy, funny, at-ease and quick on his feet. He also has excellect cross the aisle appeal. Prominent establishment convervative never-Trumper (and now former Republican) George Will wrote a column on being a never-Trumper who didn't like Biden either. So he addressed the natural challenge, name a prominent Democrat he would vote for over Trump. He named a few, Jared Polis was at the top of the list.
Now for the very reasons he so amusingly stated, he may not be the best pick, but it certainly wouldn't be a bad pick.
