A new poll today from NBC News re-affirms the reality many Republicans don’t want to face: former President who had to be pried from office Donald Trump remains the overwhelming favorite of the GOP rank-and-file, and at this point the 2024 Republican nomination for President is Trump’s to lose:

Former President Donald Trump holds 15-point lead over Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in a new NBC News poll of the race for the Republican presidential nomination — and the two men the only candidates to win double-digit support from GOP primary voters.

The former president leads the field with 46% of Republican primary voters, followed by DeSantis at 31%. Former Vice President Mike Pence sits at 6%, followed by former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott and former Arkansas Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson, who are all tied at 3%. Businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, the only other politician specifically named to GOP primary voters by the interviewers conducting the poll, is at 2%.

Sitting a mere four points below the decisive 50% mark and way out in front of stumbling Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, the window is closing faster than opponents want to admit to stop Trump. One of the things that would greatly help Trump’s opponents, of course, would be additional indictments from one of the many pending investigations against him. Unfortunately, the Republican base appears to be hardened enough against negatives about Trump that criminal indictments only boost his popularity–a phenomenon helped by Trump’s opponents and Republican officials lining up to trash the New York DA, just like they spent the last two years trashing the Justice Department in Trump’s defense.

In short, every Republican who told you since 2021 that their party was ready to “move on” from Trump was either lying or clueless. The oft-heralded “Never Trump” wing of the party decisively lost the battle for the Colorado Republican Party in March, and they’re on the cusp of losing the national campaign to Trump in 2024.

Stop telling us this isn’t what Republicans want. It’s not what some Republicans want. Maybe even some Republicans you know and respect.

But they are not the majority.

Republicans are either MAGA or they get angry when you even bring up Trump. Either way there is no one to resist. Trump is coming back and we'd better rally around Joe Biden for the sake of America's future.

  Entities like The Bulwark dot com and the Republican Accountability Project are among the few Republican and/or conservative places that are firmly anti-Trump.
  
  They were enough in 2020 possibly to deny Trump his re-election. As I've posted here before, AZ, GA, WI were close enough that withholding votes from Trump and voting for down-ballot Republicans likely played a role.
  
  This year, Trump seemed to "get it" at least a little in his recognition that being firmly anti-abortion is not a winner for the Rs. Now he is sucking up big time to the religious zealots because some of those groups threatened to withhold support from him.

    I heard a spiel this morning from one of the early morning evangelists. It was a direct and energetic statement repudiating democracy and declaring definitively that, “the US isn’t a democracy. It is a republic.”
    
    We all get his point. Not everyone should vote. Only those who follow the “Chosen One”. The threat from the Christian right should not be underestimated.

      I’d suggest NOT overestimating the threat from the Evangelical Whites and other Christian Nationalists, too.

      Thanks, Duke. I haven’t seen that point made so succinctly before. The argument about the US being a republic versus a democracy is rooted in an elitist belief that “not everyone should vote“.
      
      This explains the reluctance to embrace the reality of voter suppression, as well as ongoing efforts to suppress the votes of poor and racial-minority citizens.

  Aye! The minority of US has always loved fascism ( not really being self aware of it). MAGA or current fucked up GOP have capitalized on it since THEY CANNOT GET ELECTED ANY OTHER WAY. We sane voters need to find 2 others of any point of view and convince them of this reality. How we beat Boobert here in CD3. I am trying.

When I read the headline, I thought it might refer to the story out of Georgia today. AP's article said:

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis wrote in a letter to county Sheriff Pat Labat that she expects to announce the decisions sometime between July 11 and Sept. 1. She said she wanted to give Labat time to coordinate with local, state and federal agencies “to ensure that our law enforcement community is ready to protect the public.”

“Open-source intelligence has indicated the announcement of decisions in this case may provoke a significant public reaction,” Willis wrote in the letter, adding that some could involve “acts of violence that will endanger the safety of our community.”
