Let's Get Ready for Runoff Rumble!

  • by: Colorado Pols

The June 6 runoff election to become Denver’s next Mayor is finally set! The Denver Elections Office took an early lunch today and finished up the bulk of the ballot counting; with just 2,400 ballots left to count, Mike Johnston and Kelly Brough are far enough ahead of the rest of the field that there’s no chance Lisa Calderón can possibly catch either candidate. Calderón really could have only hoped to catch Brough, since Johnston was too far ahead; her campaign issued a grudgingly-conciliatory Tweet this afternoon.

Since it’s never too early for one of our totally un-scientific polls, tell us what you think below! Who do you THINK will emerge victorious on June 6? Will it be former state lawmaker Mike Johnston, or former Chamber of Commerce leader Kelly Brough?

BTW, Pols readers once again called the April 4 Election correctly. Tell us again what you believe will happen in June — not who you support or which candidate you might prefer.

  1.  Johnston starts out the front runner thanks to his money edge but he’s got a smarmy quality. Doesn’t come off as very sincere . But Brough will need to quickly define MJ as a toady to outstate billionaires and business interests and hope for some Hick nostalgia. My question – will Hick endorse his former COS?

  2. That poll is pretty depressing, but we should remember that Johnston has never won a truly contested election – he was handed the job of State Senator by 64 people on a vacancy committee in 2009, then relied on incumbency and money to stay in power for the next two cycles. When he ran for governor in 2018 he was embarrassed in the primary by Jared Polis, and he bailed on his announced candidacy for Senator in 2020 shortly after John Hickenlooper tossed his hat in the ring.

Johnston just wants to be elected to something – he doesn't really care what, as long as it's an important enough position to satisfy his voracious ego.
