4. I am catching up with last week’s email.  On the 13th, Misty Ewegen posted on Caring Bridge:

   After much consideration we have decided to honor Dad with an informal gathering at a place we feel captures his intelligence, wit, and informality – The Denver Press Club. 

   We invite you to gather with us on April 6th 2023, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm for an evening of stories, snacks, and drinks as we toast the memory of one of the greatest people we’ve ever known.

6. Republican Dystopian Vision of America. Heather Cox-Richardson

   Trump’s false and dystopian portrait of the nation takes to its logical conclusion the narrative Republicans have pushed since the 1980s. Since the days of Reagan, Republicans have argued that people who believe that the government should regulate business, provide a basic social safety net, protect civil rights, and promote infrastructure are destroying the country by trying to redistribute wealth from hardworking white Americans to undeserving minorities and women. Now Trump has taken that argument to its logical conclusion: the country has been destroyed by women, Black Americans, Indigenous people, and people of color, who have taken it over and are persecuting people like him. 

   This old Republican narrative created a false image of the nation and of its politics, an image pushed to a generation of Americans by right-wing media, a vision that MAGA Republicans have now absorbed as part of their identity. It reflects a manipulation of politics that Russian political theorists called “political technology.”

8. Colorado Sun opinion writer Mario Nicolais is a former Republican candidate and supporter, now out of the GOP.  He writes in a column posted this morning:

   Colorado’s zombie GOP puts Dave Williams in charge  

   After [the 2022 election] bloodbath, I declared the Colorado GOP officially dead.

   But like a zombie, they rose from the grave, brainless and bloody with no sense of direction. Similar to the gory terrors that inhabit the world of “Night of the Living Dead” — while “The Last of Us” seems timelier, its monsters are too threatening and purposeful for an apt comparison — the Colorado Republican Party simply lurches about in jerky motions looking to feed on red meat.

   They initially stumbled through the conspiracy-fueled Boot Barn shout-fest and more recently staggered alone with the election of former Rep. Dave Williams as Colorado GOP Chair. Williams is a fire-and-brimstone politico who has a history of vehemently anti-LGBTQ+ stances. …

   The Colorado Republican Party has been dead for some time. It is never coming back to life. Instead, it is doomed to wander aimlessly until put out of its misery. It is a horror show I just cannot seem to stop watching.
