2023 State of the Union Open Thread

  • by: Colorado Pols

CNN reports, the law has been allegedly laid down:

Ahead of President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy warned members during a closed-door meeting to behave themselves, reminding them that the “mics are hot” and the “cameras are on,” according to a source in the room.

House GOP conference chair Elise Stefanik issued a similar warning.

Tonight, President Joe Biden is expected to take a victory lap after a historically productive first two years in office, punctuated by the best midterm performance by a sitting President’s party in two decades. Republicans in narrow control of the House are unlikely to see things so positively, of course, necessitating Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s warning to be on their best behavior. Will Rep. Lauren Boebert make it through tonight’s address without a spectacle? We’ll be watching to see how Boebert’s ongoing feud with fellow controversy magnet Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene impacts their willingness/ability to make a scene like they did last year.

Catch the address live below, and watch this space for updates and antics:

    1. Not everyone can be a Reagan or an Obama when it comes to making speeches. If he used visual aids, then he be accused of "teaching class" to Congress. Notably prior Presidents have not used them either.

I did not watch the speech because it always makes my blood boil watching the rabid partisan reactions of the Congressmembers. But I did like one bit I saw on a recap. Apparently, Biden set a trap for loud mouth MAGAts by saying some Republicans want to cut Social Security. MTG, fell in the trap right on cue, bring Biden to the point he wanted to stress: Social Security was off the table in the debt ceiling talks.

  1. I listened to the SOTU speech in the car on the way home from grandma duty, and have to say I thought Biden hit a homer, if not out of the park.
all his points about Covid , the economy and recovery, about banning assault weapons, saving democracy were concisely and well expressed.

at one point he was talking about measures to limit the amount of fentanyl coming in the country , smuggled ir through postal mail from China. Several ass hats started shouting and braying who  knows what idiocy. I’m sure our CD3 rep was exercising her 500 vote mandate to join them.

    1. I was ambivalent about it to start but he has a way of making you want to hear what he has to say.  Pretty good speech overall even when he stumbled over words.  We've come to accept that he isn't an entertaining and if he gets tongue tied, he will eventually figure it out.  Makes for an authentic effort.

      1. The competition between Marge and Pew-Pew for Queen Bitch of the GOP promises to be a real comedy bonanza. Just the "howler monkey" photos alone are worth the price of admission. Not to mention the seriously hilarious rhetoric.

  2. Appears that George Santos had an encounter last evening with Senator Mitt Romney. According to the article on Yahoo News, it didn't go well for George.

    1. So this is where we are. Mitt Romney, a vulture capitalist who in 2012 volunteered a story about how he tortured a dog for 8 hours as a shining example of how he's a can-do kinda guy who should definitely be POTUS, is what passes for a voice of reason in he contemporary GOP.

  3. Well done Brandon! Triggering the GOP morons one of who "represents" us here in la la CD03.  Hey Trump even thought it was a great speech…..LOL
