Waldo Canyon Fire. Thanks to El Paso County Commissioner Peggy Littleton and others for all they do

Our community is suffering with the devastation of the fires.  Yet it is in times like these we see people from all political persuasions coming together to uplift those who have been beat down.  I personally thank President Obama for his visit and was touched with what I think were sincere condolences to our community and with aid to come as we can only hope and pray the president delivers.  We greatly appreciate Sheriff Terry Maketa, and our first responders, our firefighters, our city police, our mayor, Steve Bach, and so many others whose genuine concern for this suffering community is apparent.  But, because of an email sent me last night, I want to express a special thank you to El Paso County Commissioner, Peggy Littleton, for some practical wisdom she has shared in the last week that may save some lives in the future and am going to post here what this is with a personal story first. Read on.

I don’t visit ColoradoPols any more.  My passion isn’t to spend time here so a quick return today is all I will do.

The first day after the fire, maybe the second, I can’t remember, Peggy Littleton was interviewed by one of the tv stations and she advised how to use a reverse 911 number so that anyone who subscribed could get a call to alert them to a need to evacuate in light of the fire.  I gave that number to my son and daughter in law as they were in an area where there was danger.  Well, they subscribed and good thing they did.  They got that call they wish they hadn’t but moved quickly to evacuate their home.

I did NOT see, however, another tv interview where Commissioner Littleton talked about “YOYO”  as in, you may be on your own in an emergency, and then she made specific concrete and helpful comments on what to do to prepare a 72 hour kit in the sad situation where an emergency strikes and you need to be ready to move fast to flee harms way.  A friend sent me a link to look at that interview and here it is for anyone else who wants to know what to have ready to be prepared to leave quickly in an emergency: http://www.koaa.com/videos/wha…

Please, check that interview out. It is practical, useful, and timely.  After I watched the interview, I wanted the full list of what she recommended and went to her website: http://www.peggylittleton.org/… where I found the full list.

I do not agree with Commissioner Littleton’s votes on some things I follow but when I see a public servant wanting to serve and offering useful information, I am absolutely shocked.  It happens too little. Too many of our elected officials are really interested in self promotion, not their constituents.  Thank you, Commissioner Littleton.  Your humble spirit and genuine concern for El Paso county does not go unnoticed.

  1. And you’re right, during a disaster, partisanship doesn’t matter. There will be plenty of time to sort out what could have been done differently later. Wishing you the best Natalie P.
