Doug Lamborn: Profiles In Chutzpah

  • by: Colorado Pols

FOX 31’s Eli Stokols:

President Obama is set to arrive at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs around noon Friday and will spend an hour or two touring the fire lines.

Congressman Doug Lamborn, R-Colorado Springs, will be with the President aboard Air Force One.

It’s likely to be an awkward flight given that Lamborn, who survived a primary challenge on Tuesday, made headlines earlier this year for his decision to skip the President’s State of the Union address.

Last year, he also apologized after likening the President to a “tar baby.”

We talked yesterday about Rep. Doug Lamborn’s joining a request by the entire Colorado delegation for President Barack Obama to declare a disaster due to severe wildfires burning in many parts of the state. We compared that request with Lamborn’s press release in April calling for caps on disaster relief spending, and implying politics in Obama’s “very generous use of ‘disaster declarations.'” The prior moments of ugliness from Rep. Lamborn toward President Obama that Stokols refers to above both received lots of coverage.

Safe to say, President Obama knows who he’s flying with.

At the same time, it’s perfectly appropriate, even expected, for Rep. Lamborn to accompany the President on his visit to Lamborn’s district. It would probably be a bigger scandal if Lamborn had not flown with the President given this history of petty insults. He can’t let stuff like that be the story while his constituents’ homes are burning down, and it’s a relief to see him put it aside.

But after all that history, and Lamborn’s now-profoundly hypocritical complaints about Obama and disaster relief, we would still very much like to be a fly on the wall on this four-hour fight.

  1. I hope he feels like the FUCKING MORON he is for not attending the SOTU, his previous comments on the use of disaster funds, and of course the tar baby nonsense.

    Total persona non grata.

  2. 1. The President will be perfectly gracious.

    2. The Congressman will be a childish buffoon – either on the flight or after it’s over.

But perhaps the Congressman will surprise us and learn from his past errors.

    1. assholes like Lamborn need to get put in their place.  Brewer down in AZ, TX’s Gomert, and plenty other GOP’rs have no respect for the man and are bigger assholes to think they’re better than the office. Pathetic.

      1. “Doug, y’all come back here while I take a dump.  I want to set you straight while I drop some Texas sized turds in the crapper.  And if you don’t show some ‘preciation for how things work, you’re gonna be one of them.”

I’ve only heard of two famous figures that would have conversations whilst evacuating them bowels.  LBJ and Ghandi.  Any others?

        1. that I read from one of his biographies.  One of his congressional staffers had about a 3 foot pile of constituent letters to answer, and kept complaining that once he answered a letter from a particular constituent a second letter from the same constituent would appear further down the pile, and he’d have to answer that too.

The pile was stacked chronologically with the oldest letters on the top.  LBJ took the whole stack and flipped it upside down.  Told him “There, son, problem solved” and just walked away disgusted. He was a rare breed.

          1. ….he would have surely been another FDR and Reagan (later, of course).  Actually, if not for Watergate, Nixon may have well made the Great President list, too.  He brought us OSHA, the EPA, Native American rights.  He was also working on universal health care until other events took over.

I read a biography about LBJ a couple of years ago by Robert Novak.  Since I was a young man in the LBJ years I certainly never understood him or the era well.  Wow, what a politician, and I say that with the highest regard.  His skills, whether nuanced finagling or blunt force trauma were amazing.

I love how he used to drive his Cadillac on the ranch pushing towards 100 mph, a cup of Bourbon in one hand, talking to reporters, the Secret Service freaking out.  Couldn’t happen today, although GW managed to fall off his mountain bike presumably w/o booze.

  3. On the ground, Doug hung close to the President to get captured by the cameras. Don’t know if he touched the President, because, well, you know, “to be associated with him” would be “like touching a…”
