Suppose They Gave a "Religious Freedom" Rally and No One Came?

Another “religious freedom” rally was held on the west steps of the Capitol on Friday, with organizers and speakers reportedly very upset about the “lack of press coverage.” This despite the fact that the AP’s Kirsten Wyatt was indeed present, amusedly recording their complaints that no reporters were there.

We haven’t yet heard about anything particularly egregious said by speakers at this rally, in contrast to the prior rally where basically every subject was enthusiastically tied back to “the Nazis.” It’s possible that after the prior outing, the press was trying to do them a favor by ignoring them, but we tend to agree with the organizers that everyone in Colorado should watch these.

Albeit for different reasons.

Perhaps the most interesting thing that we’ve seen is footage from Wyatt of Sen. Tim Neville reading off desired GOP primary winners. Neville praised Owen Hill and Rep. Marsha Looper in particular, opponents of incumbent Reps. Larry Liston and Majority Leader Amy Stephens respectively. Safe to say, this wasn’t authorized by GOP leadership.

The question is, are Tom Tancredo loyalists dwindling in number, or was it just too hot Friday?

  1. As far as I know it does not include any public rallies….mainly religious observations to protest the Obama administration…June 21st up to July 4th..

Here in Denver, there will be a lecture among the many activities planned, looking at JFK’s classic American speech on the Separation of Church and State to

the Houston Ministerial Alliance in 1960….old chaput was big on attacking JFK for the speech….

The Philadelphia Jury is still deliberating on the

criminal charges against two priests…..wonder if there is a connection on the timing of the two????

  2. That’s the “Religious, Free, Dumb” rally.

The “religious freedom” rally was quietly held elsewhere and included people of all faiths, who gathered around a refreshment table (including kosher, halal, and vegetarian selections) to discuss their areas of commonality. There was no need for press coverage, as the rally was intended to foster cooperation rather than inflammatory and divisive rhetoric. Tancredo devotees were turned away at the door, though not without the offer of refreshment, in the spirit of most faiths’ prophetic figures, generally known for their generosity to even their own enemies.

(reporting from wishful thinking land, where it is currently raining heavily directly over the forest fire)

  3. of the folks who think they alone know the “answer” and also know what a “fortnight” is show up, will the bishops thank for the press coverage?

    1. love late 18th (earlier Jane Austen) and 19th (especially Trollope) century English lit, but won’t be attending.

In PC’s wishful thinking vein, would it make anyone feel better to know that, in the real world, my Mom’s Reform Jewish congregation in Florida has a sister Muslim congregation and they get together to socialize and get to know one another on a monthly basis?

  4. .

I oppose the government mandating that a Catholic hospital has to engage in what it/ we consider to be immoral/ amoral conduct.

To rationalize this mandate, what mental gymnastics must you go through to maintain that you accept the diktat of the 1st Amendment ?

    1. The contraception mandate that has spurred this “religious freedom” canard, is for insurance companies contracted with religiously-affiliated employers to provide those employees  with the contraception benefits that all employees are entitled to.

The mandate is on the insurance companies.  No religious employer pays for something they object to (their employees using), and no religious person must use something they object to.

And the nonsense about “abortifacient drugs and devices”, which usually refers to emergency contraception, is just that, nonsense.

      1. .

I thought it was about mandating that the Catholic institutions pay for the objectionable benefits directly.

But if they pay indirectly, through insurance companies, it seems like almost the same thing.

        …..

It is my understanding that your practice is limited to a narrow segment of the abortion business (birth control,) albeit accounting for the vast majority of deaths through that procedure.  In Colorado Springs, I think 2,000 children die at Planned Parenthood each year.

I see no role for a priest in the procedures done at your clinic, except maybe maintaining a prayer vigil 100 feet away, and providing aftercare/ counsel for the rest of the woman’s life.

But aren’t abortions conducted by pretty much all Obstetricians, when medically necessary ?

Don’t you think priests and husbands/ fathers should be involved in those situations ?

        .

        1. We can have a conversation on reasonable terms, but when you come from nutbagville (birth control=abortion business and “children die”) it will be short.

No, most Obstetricians don’t do abortions.

My sig line is a quotation from the Colbert Report.  It ignores the two most important people involved in the decision: a woman and her doctor.

You haven’t answered what conscience-offending conduct Catholic hospitals are mandated to perform.

Do you clutch your pearls about your tax money being spent on executions and unjust wars?

    2. government restrictions on their business practices, they should be ineligible to accept any federal payment for services or operations. Specifically, no Medicare, Medicaid, education grants for personnel and particularly no tax-exempt status.

If the men in skirts truly want to have their institutions free of the government, then we should call them on it.

      1. .

They are, after all, Catholic institutions.

I salute Satan for getting his minions to pervert our government into mandating immoral conduct.

But I also recognize the fundamental error.

If I understand you correctly, I have to pay for your medical care, but I have no say in what I pay for, even if I find it reprehensible ?

Why don’t you dig into your OWN pocket to pay for it ?

        …….

So, in your dreamworld, Catholic hospitals have to provide services for free ?

Can you at least give them some trees off which to harvest free money ?

        1. I don’t get to tell the Catholic church how to spend its money, in spite of the fact that I subsidize its tax exemption.

I don’t get to tell the CU football team how much to drink, in spite of the fact that my tax money supports their education.

And I don’t get to tell you what to say on the internet, in spite of the fact that my taxes supported the construction of the infrastructure that made it possible.

If you don’t like the idea that you may somehow contribute a penny someday to something you dislike, go live on the uninhabited side of Gilligan’s Island and learn to love coconuts.

        2. WTF?

My understanding is that  Satan is being  given a lot of credit in catholic circles these days….mainly causing all those priests to abuse little children and teenage boys..and then controlling the behavior of other priests/bishops/popes to make sure they covered up the evil deeds.  If there is that much demonic control over the catholic church, then maybe fears of its power are legitimate.

Evidently, the first thing to go in catholic theology was the concept of free will and conscience and rational, logic thought….the only real gifts of the church to western civilization….

Now, Barron X, the United STates is not a theocracy; the United STates does  not have a concordat with the Vatican.  The United States is governed by the Constitution.  The Constitution makes access to contraception an absolute civil right.  The Constitution makes access to abortion in the first trimester, an absolute right.  When you ( and in your last appearance here, I think you said you had some kind of military service) or any catholic goes into US government service, he or she takes an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States. The 8th commandment, as counted by catholics, forbids swearing a false oath.  So either catholics are lying and violating their  8th amendment or catholics put the civil rights of their fellow citizens above the dictates of a foreign country….the Vatican.

I understand that the so-called Fortnight of prayer and fasting will be devoted to attacking the Obama administration and also “deconstructing” Kennedy’s classic speech to the Ministers in Houston.  If anyone in the catholic church, IMHO, still believed in a Just God, that Fortnight would be spend in acts of Penance and Mortification in a beginning attempt to atone for the sins of the Fathers.  Tragically, I believe it is designed only to drown out the facts coming out of the trial in Philadelphia.

        1. By the way, good to see you around again Barron X. Not aware of all the circumstances, but I had read that you’d somehow been hounded off of this site because you offer contrary viewpoints from time to time. Not sure if that was the case or not.

    3. It’s not clear whether Christians are born that way, or if it’s a choice. Maybe it’s the result of influences in their lives — family, friends, all sorts of things.

  5. Long ago (1965), the Supreme Court decided that decisions whether to use contraception were up to the exercise of conscience by women and men of our country. Today the Federal government, by ensuring access to affordable, effective birth control for millions of women across the country, is making sure that not only affluent women but all women can actually make those conscientious choices.

And yet, the USCCB now claims that this program violates religious freedom — even though it is NOT applied to fully religious institutions like parishes and dioceses but only to Catholic-sponsored colleges and hospitals that are open to all and receive federal grants, and at that is now set up so that insurance companies, not the colleges, foot the bill.

Claiming this program violates religious freedom is an Orwellian perversion of thought — attacking religious freedom in the guise of defending it.
